The Problem with Today's Congress

A Review of the Challenges Facing Our Legislature

Cody Dean
In recent days, the United States congress has found itself amidst challenging waters as it has struggled to provide bipartisan solutions to the distinct challenges that face the nation in modern times. The Obama administration has ushered in a new season of politics into the American legislature that has proved both a blessing and a shortcoming. While the Democrats have significant power in the House of Representative, the deadlock in the senate proposes undeniable challenges as the majority of the government is pulling to the left as a select few in the senate ravage in the opposite direction. A system of compromise must be met or we will surely face four years of an administration under congressional turmoil.

President Obama's liberal approach to government is embraced by some and rebutted by others. His economic stimulus that original totaled nearly 900 million dollars has brought with it long running argument in the senate. Although it passed with ease in the democratically controlled house under the leadership of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid house faced impressive challenges as he scraped for even non-existent republican support.

The root of the challenge lies not within the true dissention of the American people. It is obvious in every state that the current condition of the American economy is affecting society. As the jobless masses amount with every passing day, the legislature feuds on over petty differences that are of minimal concern to the general population but rather play to the interests of a select few. This is not the way that the representatives of the people should conduct business. This is a classic example of a part affecting the whole in such a way that it prevents the fundamental solutions from passing consent.

It is with sincere hope from the hearts of American society that we beg the 111th Congress to see past their differences and work out some genuine solutions for the ailing workers and professionals. Too much emphasis is placed on the "D" or "R" that is placed in front of one's name on C-SPAN and not enough lies within the intent of each representative. If we do not make progress towards a common purpose, we will watch on the sidelines as each of millions more Americans lose their jobs, insurance, retirement, and quality of life.

Act now, Congress, act now!
