The Chihuahua is one of the smallest breeds around. A lot of people purchase a Chihuahua just because of their looks. They do not do any research on the breed, they just buy one because they are cute. Unfortunately, this is why so many dogs end up on the streets of in the humane societies. They are protective of their space and owners, but I would not trust them for personal protection.
Because the Chihuahua is so small, it can be overlooked and easily tripped on. And unless you are not careful, you will be spending a lot of time on the floor with your puppy. If you have children the Chihuahua may not be the best answer either because they never look at where they are going. Take this into consideration when selecting your new puppy.
They also can be easily injured by falling objects. If you drop even a plastic cup on the floor and it lands on your Chihuahua, you could seriously injure your dog. They are so small and fragile even the littlest things can take a toll on him or her. Other things that could easily harm your puppy would be other dogs maybe larger in size, other people and children.
Chihuahuas also can get sick very easily. The smallest change in temperature can get them sick. Because they are so small in size the immune systems are not the greatest. If you live in extreme cold or heat, I would suggest you potty train them indoors so that they do not have to bear the bad weather. Chihuahuas are more fragile then any animal that I know of, so you need to take additional care so they do not get sick. When you Chihuahua gets older they will be prone to knee and joint problems, which is typical of the breed.
The average Chihuahua weighs about 6 pounds. That is the size of a small newborn baby. This will give you some comparison, A lot of Chihuahua owners prefer to have teacup size, which is only a few pounds. Make sure you are committed to the care and needs of a Chihuahua before you make a purchase. You have to be prepare to take care of the needs and you will be very rewarded.

Post a CommentExcellent and informative. Better than the article "why everyone should own a chihuahua". Clearly, everyone should not. We have been fortunate to welcome three chihuahuas in to our home over the past 25 years (before they were a fashion accessory). While we appreciate the compliments we receive, we also take the opportunity to educate people on why they should not get a chihuahua simply because " their kids are little now, too, or they won't cost much or be too much work because they are little, or because you can dress them up or carry them in your purse. Thanks for being another lover of the breed that helps educate people so that a chihuahua will be adopted in to a suitable environment.
love the information
