"No return address... typical," he said as he closed the door and hung his hat on the knob. He dusted his brown suit off before sitting down at his small table. The tension gripped him as he ripped up the corner and opened it. A sigh of release came as a familiar sent flowed from the envelope.
"Ruby, why did you have to scare me like that?" He said pulling out the letter that had her perfume on it.
Dear George
Come and see me tonight, ill be by the lake were we met remember? oh and don't keep me waiting
Ruby
He put the letter on the table and went to the closet. His eyes narrowed in on his overcoat. She always liked his overcoat.
He ran down his steps like a mad man his hat bumming against his hair and his keys jingling in his hand. He ran to his Model A. Ruby hated it, but he loved it because it was the only car he ever had that started every time he tried.
He stopped just before the park and carelessly opened his door. She was sitting on a park bench patently waiting for him. But it was different.
He got out of the car but just before he slammed the door he thought of something. She always sat on the right side of the bench but this time she was sitting on the left. He questioned this for a second then cracked a smile and shook his head.
"Snap out of it before she thinks you've gone crazy George," he muttered to himself.
He made it almost half way to the bench before he stepped on a twig. The load snap made Ruby's head turn.
"George Run" she screamed at the top of her lungs just before a man flew from behind the tree. A shot blew right across George's ear. He turned and ran back to his car as another shot nipped the overcoat and lodged into his car.
"That's enough lip out of you." Shouted another armed man as he butted ruby in the mouth with the end of his shotgun.
Another shot blew right through the passenger and driver's side windows.
"Please let it still be here. George pleaded as he threw open the door and reached underneath the seat. It was a small twenty two caliber revolving pistol, from his days of running liquor across the boarder.
Another shot blasted the tire. As the shotgun man unloaded a slug that tore strait through the thin metal of the vehicle.
George almost fired blindly, but then he thought, What if I hit ruby. He poked his head out for a second, and saw that she was at least by the bench if not somewhere else. The rifle man hit the headlight of the Model A which was only an inch or two away from his face. He shot back a few times jut to keep them from coming any closer, then reloaded the gun. After a few more shots rang out, then suddenly there was a pause in the firing.
"George You ruined my business." Shouted a voice
"Frank?" George exclaimed in surprise. "I thought you were in prison."
"And I thought you were a trustworthy man who could run some good quality spirits, things are not always what they seem." The man with the shotgun replied as he loaded its double barrels again. Another shot rang out putting a hole in the gas tank.
"For God sakes wait until I say what I need to say before you shoot again damn it." He cursed at the man with the rifle.
"Why did you drag Ruby into this." George said looking under his car to see if he could get an angle to shoot at.
"Because you turned almost right after you met her. That's quite a coincidence don't you think?" Another shot rang out going through the car and into Georges shoulder.
More and more shots peppered the vehicle as George lay sprawled in the blood and gas.
Just then sirens rang out and flashing lights hit the seen. Making the two drop there guns and run. George tossed his gun away, just before the first officer climbed out of the car. They flooded the area nabbing the two and stuffing them into the cars.
"George!" came a voice as he was being helped into a car.
"Ruby," George said as they hugged. "I Think I will be getting that new car after all."
