If you just became a supervisor at work, that is good; however, you are not out of the woods because there is a certain path you have yet to take. This path involves going the right way in regard to how you manage your staff. You will learn tips on how to manage those who work for you.

It is important to get to know your entire staff. One reason is that it will allow you to learn what their capabilities and needs are. Another is that it will help bring out the human side of you as your workers see that you are interested in them personally.

Whenever you want them to do something, you must ask them nicely. By doing this, you will make them more willing to comply. Furthermore, you will exhibit good manners.

It is imperative to treat the employees equally. One reason is that it is necessary to be fair to everyone. Another is that it will show you do not believe in favoritism.

You have to know how to be firm. Although you should focus on being nice and patient, you must avoid being a pushover. If an employee refuses to do what you ask, you should say, "I have asked you nicely to do this important task. If you will not comply, I will have to take disciplinary action."

You should be sensitive to your staff. If they look upset, you should ask them what is wrong. If they need something that is relevant to the job, you should accommodate them. If they need to take time off for family reasons, you should grant it.

It is a good idea to encourage them to take frequent breaks. By doing this, you will help them get rest and keep their minds fresh. Also, you will help make them more productive.

It is critical to avoid yelling at them. The first reason is that it is demeaning to them and you. The second is that it will make them more likely to try to find a job elsewhere, leading to a higher turnover rate which is harmful to your bottom line. The third is that it can lead to a physical or verbal confrontation.

You must be honest with them. The first way is to provide candid feedback on their performance. The second is to inform them of all important decisions and events.

You need to make them feel valuable. The first way is to welcome their suggestions while keeping an open mind. The second is to reward them for doing a good job with praise, a decent raise and possibly a promotion.

You have learned how to manage your staff. By following these tips, you will please your staff and yourself.
