The Pros and Cons of Being the Oldest Child

V. L. Hamlin
Marsha, Marsha, Marsha! Everyone hates the oldest sibling. She always gets to do everything first, she always has the best grades, the best clothes, the best friends, the best hair...

But, does anyone ever stop to think about the cons of being the oldest sibling? Sure, we all know about the pros, after all it's all the youngest ever talks about, but are there negatives to being the oldest child? Definitely!

Below I've listed the pros and cons of being the oldest kid in a multi-children family. I've listed the cons first, because we all know hearing the good news after the bad, kind of makes it a little easier to digest!

Cons

It seems every Friday night you have to baby sit your younger siblings. No going roller skating or out for pizza like your friends, oh no! It's Barney and chicken nuggets for you!

Five minutes in the bathroom? Are you kidding me? How am I supposed to get ready in five minutes? Oh, yes! When there is more than one child, there is generally a time limit in the bathroom.

Privacy? What is that? Sharing a bedroom with a younger sibling is often a necessity and absolutely hated by the oldest!

Maternal or Paternal Instincts...it seems as if you are second in line for all the personal questions they just can't bring themselves to ask mom or dad.

How is it your responsibility to feed the younger kids?

You are bound by the older sibling law to uphold all secrets and by the way, don't repeat what you saw last Saturday, because if you do, he'll tell Mom and Dad what you did last Friday.

Somehow, it's your fault that your younger brother broke the plate in the china cabinet.

Why do you have ten chores for the week and they only have three?

Pros

You get to stay up later

A later curfew

Can go more places alone

You get to be bossy and get away with it...well sometimes

A Bigger Allowance

College is a lot closer for you than them

"first-born children had higher IQs by about 3 points on average."

As you can see, being the first born child does have it's positives and it's negatives. But all in all, it's a lot of fun! I'm the oldest of four and I have a lot of wonderful memories of growing up the oldest.
