The Pros and Cons of Buying a Chaise Lounge for Your Home

Kassidy Emmerson
I recently wrote a review of the Ashley Furniture Durapella Chaise Lounge I bought.

It was really a big decision for me to give away my recliner- a conventional piece of furniture- and replace it with a unique chaise lounge. Especially since my male family members and friends who visit always headed for the recliner to sit and relax. There's no doubt- a chaise lounge is stylish and chic. But, it's not for everyone. Before you buy one, consider all the standpoints first. Read this informative article and learn about the pros and cons of buying a chaise lounge for your home!

The Pros

1. A Chaise Lounge Livens Up the Appearance of a Room
Since it's not a traditional piece of furniture, a chaise lounge makes visitors look twice when they enter a room. It adds a sense of excitement to an otherwise ho-hum decor.

2. A Chaise Lounge Is Affordable
Have you priced couches or love seats recently? I went shopping with a friend for a couch recently, and we couldn't find she liked under $500! I think the original price of my chaise lounge was $199.00. But I got it on clearance for $149.00 plus tax.

3. A Chaise Lounge Comes In Many Different Styles and Colors
No matter what your personal preference is, you can probably find a chaise lounge to match it. You can buy a chaise lounge with no arms, one arm or two, a level body, a curved body, and more.

4. A Chaise Lounge Gives You Personal Space
For some reason, no one will sit on the chaise lounge in my living room except me. My guy prefers the "manly" couch. Visitors admire it, then quickly park themselves on another piece of furniture. As a result, my chaise lounge has become, well... my personal space! That's rather nice!

The Cons

1. The Size and Placement of a Chaise Lounge
My chaise lounge is 35 inches wide, 66 inches long, and 38 inches high. I suppose it's average size. The height and width aren't a problem, but it's as long as a small couch. There are two usual ways to position a chaise lounge in a room: 1) straight out from a wall, or 2) straight out from a corner. Either way, your chaise will be sticking out into the room.

2. A Chaise Lounge Isn't As Practical As a Sleeper Loveseat
If you need an extra bed for an overnight guest, a chaise lounge could work in a pinch. But, there's little room to stretch out if you're very tall at all. I'm a fairly tall woman, and my feet hang over the edge if I stretch out. A better choice in furniture to accommodate sleep-overs would, of course, be a loveseat with a pullout bed.

3. A Chaise Lounge Isn't A Seat For Visitors (See Pros- #4)
As I said, visitors at my house shy away from sitting on the chaise lounge. I can't blame them, I'd do the same. Unless you were a family member or a close friend, you'd feel odd sitting down and stretching out. And, if the chaise lounge had no arms so you could sit sideways on it, soon your back would be tired from sitting up with no support.

I like them for outside... but not for the inside.

I think I will stick to my sofa and recliner. Thanks for the info, though.

I'd rather settle for a recliner, but a chaise lounge can really improve the appearance of a room.

I want one so bad, but you're right - the problem is how to place it.

Excellent pros and cons. You are so right in that guests tend to shy away from them so they aren't really practical for extra seating.

Great analysis, I agree with you.

I agree with you about not-for-visitors. I always imagine them in the bedroom, as a comfy stool/clothes horse/romance-inspiring piece. (I've been wanting one for a while! =)
