A credit card is a piece of plastic that allows you to pay for services and sales even though you do not have cash on hand and in the process, borrow from your credit line with the credit card company. The borrower is expected to make monthly payments on the outstanding balance to the credit card company. A credit card could either be a VISA or MasterCard. A credit card holder may pay just the minimum amount during the due date, usually once every month. If the credit card holder fails to pay the required minimum amount, a finance fee is going to be charged to him.

Admittedly, there are several advantages to having a credit card. You can buy a lot of things without bringing with you a lot of money. Keeping track of your finances and your expenses is easier because you will find them in a single statement. You can easily purchase anything simply by mail or phone. Furthermore, large quantities of your expenses can be paid in monthly installments. If the product you bought is defective, credit card allows you to withhold payment for it. The convenience of having a credit card extends to making car rental, hotel, and other reservations. Now, it is very easy to order by phone or online and to pay using your credit card. Moreover, if there is an emergency, you can use your credit card to obtain cash when you do not have cash at hand. Your credit card history will help you acquire a credit history which will be used when you want to avail of home loans and other credit.

Of course, there are also disadvantages to having a credit card. If you are one impulsive buyer, you may find yourself overspending and buried in debts. If your credit card gets stolen, you are required to pay for the replacement and be inconvenient to apply for a replacement card. It may take months to investigate and resolve any fraudulent or unauthorized charges on your credit card. Having too many cards all at once is guaranteed to get a person further into debt. Most credit cards have high interest rates. Having huge debts and paying back only small amounts will result in high finance charges. This will certainly not help a person resolve his debt problem.

Before getting a credit card, make sure that you read the terms and get to understand the. Read carefully about the disclosure terms and fees. You must compare charges on your bill using your copies of sale slips. You must discipline yourself to pay your bills on time. To prevent unauthorized use, you need to protect your credit cards and account numbers all the time. Also, you can draw a line through blank spaces not in used above your signature when signing receipts. Destroy or keep carbons. Never give your credit card number over the phone unless you know the business or you were the one who initiated the call. List your credit card number and phone numbers of each card issuer in a safe place just in case your credit cards get stolen or lost.
