The Pros and Cons of Group Versus Individual Incentive Programs

There are both pros and cons of group versus individual incentive programs. Incentive programs provide motivation to individuals in a unique way. Incentive programs offer reward that can come in a variety of forms. Types of incentive programs vary in many ways. Incentive programs can provide monetary gain, status, prizes, vacation days, and many other types of benefits. Incentive programs can be tailored to groups or individuals.

The pros of group incentive programs and the pros of individual incentive programs can be similar or completely opposite. A pro of both types of incentive programs is an increase in productivity. A pro of group incentive programs is teamwork building. Another pro of group programs is that individuals will probably work harder because they know there are other people depending on them. Group incentive programs are positive because if members are paired together well they can learn from each other and add important skills and knowledge to the group.

Some pros of individual incentive programs are individuals can feel valued for their personal work, individuals will be able to control their own success, and individuals can feel confidence in their personal growth and work. Pros of individual incentive programs are based on personal growth and gain.

Incentive programs also have various cons associated with them. A con of group incentive programs is teams may struggle to work together is not paired up well. Another con of group incentive programs is that some groups may have conflicts if they feel the work is unbalanced or unevenly shared. When it comes time for taking credit for work; they may have bitter feelings towards their coworkers.

A con of individual incentive programs is lack of teamwork. This can cause competition amongst employees, and this can cause conflict. Employees may find ways to decrease the productivity of others instead of finding ways to increase their own productivity. Another con of individual incentive programs is there are fewer employees that receive benefits, which may cause hard feelings.

The pros and cons of incentive programs vary with the type of incentive programs used. These motivational strategies can have appositive impact on workers and productivity if they are used correctly.
