The Pros and Cons of Menopause

When a woman goes through what is called menopause it means that the woman's body will stop producing eggs thereby not allowing her to become pregnant. Menopause will usually take place between the ages of 45 to 55 years old. In some cases women have encountered menopause as early as the age of 35 while other women have experienced menopause as late as the age of 65.

One of the pros of having menopause is not to have to deal with your monthly period. It is so much easier when you do not have to worry about it. A period is supposed to occur monthly but sometimes it will be a week earlier or even a week later. So one of the positive aspects of menopause is no longer being bothered with your period.

A con of going through menopause is that the estrogen level is down. Hormones along with progesterone are down as well. Why is this not necessarily good for women? It is because you are then more prone to heart disease, osteoporosis and even strokes. Estrogen is needed to protect your body against the dreaded heart disease. When you go through menopause, you are more prone to it. You can reduce heart disease by limiting the amount of stress you go through and as well as some form of exercise. Loss of bone increases significantly within 4 to 5 years of women who are going through menopause. One great way to combat osteoporosis is to take the required amount of calcium recommended for your age.

Another con when going through menopause obviously is not being able to bear children. A baby would be out of the question unfortunately. It is definitely something you have to take into account when you get married and decide with your partner when to have children should you decide to get pregnant unless of course, you both have adoption in mind.

Other negative aspects of menopause can include hot flashes or what is called night sweats which can be uncomfortable for women. You might struggle with not being able to sleep which probably occurred due to the night sweats. Women might experience headaches or aches in their joints. Anxiety might even begin to set in. If you have any problems dealing with the difficulty of menopause, you should contact your health care provider so he or she can give you the best advice on how to be able to cope with this.
