The Pros and Cons of Owning a Pug

Pug Ownership is it for You?

Robin Neorr
I have owned a pug for five years. He came to me from the Ohio Pug Rescue. There are a lot of pros and cons to owning a pug. Please take these things into consideration before deciding to become the owner of any pet.

PROS

Pugs are excellent with children. I have a young daughter who doesn't know her own strength. The pug has never so much as growled at her for hitting him to hard. He licks her face to show her he loves her, and has never had to be disciplined for his actions toward my daughter.

Pugs are loyal. They will love you to death, they will follow you around, and they will be your best friend. My pug is definitely a lap dog. He wants to be on my lap or around me at all hours day and night.

Pugs are so ugly they are cute. I mean really how can you not love something with a squished up nose and bug eyes?

Pugs are great pets to have if you live in a small space. Pugs do need there exercise, but they do not need to go for long walks. Pugs prefer a short jaunt around the block to a five mile jog. They have little legs and small noses; they could never handle a jog like that.

The funny run, turbo charge, whatever you want to call it is another interesting pug action. When puggy gets very excited he will run around the yard like mad. He lowers his body to the ground, and straightens his tail. It is probably the funniest thing you will ever see in your life and every pug I have ever known has done some version of this run.

CONS

Don't let that short hair fool you, pugs shed like mad. They need to be brushed on a regular basis. They also need to be washed on a regular basis. With proper grooming the pugs hair will not take over your house, but I am warning you if you think you are going to be able to slack on brushing this short haired dog, be prepared to break out the lint brush.

Pugs have separation anxiety and you might not like how they express their dissatisfaction of you leaving them alone. My pug and I have heard this is not uncommon, will occasionally get mad when I leave the house and mark his territory. Now he can hold it through the night, but he can't hold it for an hour while I go to the grocery store even though I let him out right before leaving? Pesky little puggy!

Pugs snore. They are loud. They can't help it. It is part of there lovability, but if you think you will not be able to get through the night if you hear the snoring, then you don't want a pug.

Pugs are not guard dogs, don't even try.

Pugs occasionally think they are cats. I can use a laser pointer and the dog will chase it around like crazy.

In conclusion I love my pug. I know he wills never protect me from the boogie man, but I know that no matter what I do he will always love me.

If you look at a Pug, you just have to laugh. Half alien, half dog.
