The Pros and Cons of Purchasing Used Game Consoles and Games

Steven Moneyworth
The Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Nintendo Wii have been out for several years now. That being said, the prices of older game systems and games have fallen considerably recently. If you never owned any of the older generation of game systems, such as the Xbox, Playstation 2, or Nintendo Gamecube, it is worth considering purchasing one of these now. Of course, there are several pros and cons to consider when purchasing an older game console, and I list some of these here.

Old Game Console Purchase Pro #1 - Older Game Systems are Cheap
Many used game consoles are available for less than $100. Likewise, games for these consoles may cost $20 at most. Many will cost less. If you are looking for some low-cost fun, an older game console and games may suit your needs perfectly.

Old Game Console Purchase Pro #2 - Older Game Systems and Games are Plentiful
Many people have sold or are selling their older game consoles in order to get money for newer consoles and games. The market is more or less flooded with used games and game systems, meaning that you can find games and rarities that you may not have been able to find two to three years ago. This surplus also drives down the prices of used games.

Old Game Console Purchase Pro #3 - Older Game Systems Are Still Fun
Even though older games may not have the best graphics or processing speed, they can still rival newer games as far as how enjoyable they are. More people have played and would play Goldeneye for the N64 than would play Perfect Dark 2 for the Xbox 360.

Old Game Console Purchase Con #1 - Variable Condition of Used Consoles
Buying used is often a gamble, as the condition of the consoles or games that you purchase may vary from being near-mint to mediocre. Depending on the way in which you purchase used, there may be no way to get money back on nonfunctioning consoles or games. If you can, try to buy used game consoles or games from a location that has a return or refund policy.

Old Game Console Purchase Con #2 - No Warranty
If you get an older game console and it breaks after the return period, it's almost certain that there will be no warranty on the system. And it is unlikely that customer service will fix or replace your older-generation game system. This is a major consideration, especially if you are going to invest two or three hundred dollars in your used game console.

Old Game Console Purchase Con #3 - Not at Technological Forefront
Depending on your personality, you may be influenced by the fact that older-generation game consoles are not the most technologically-advanced electronics available. If this is the case, you're probably not going to be happy with an older game console and games. Otherwise, an older symptom may be for you.

If you are looking for a way to have fun playing videogames and save money, buying an older game console and games may be for you. If you have any other ideas of why someone might or might not want to purchase an older game console or games, please share your thoughts in the form of a comment. Thank you for reading!

Although not as sophisticated, some of these are still a long way from Atari. Good article.

The variable condition of used consoles (a point you noted) is what gives me pause. Having watched teens use these systems, I know they can be rough on them. Excellent focus on the various factors to consider when buying used game consoles!
