The Pros and Cons of Using Ben Wa Balls

Tara M. Clapper
Ben Wa balls are small, spherical items usually sold in pairs. They are made of plastic and are intended for use in the vagina to strengthen vaginal muscles and to create pleasure within the vagina. Sometimes used as sex toys, some Ben Wa balls are sold with bells inside. Ben Wa balls should always be cleaned before use and after storage. Silicone and glass Ben Wa balls can be cleaned in boiling water.

Pros: Possible Improved Health and Pleasure

Ben Wa balls can help you gain better control of the PC (Pubococcygeus) muscle. This can help with incontinence and, like the Kegel exercise, can strengthen a woman's ability to tighten vaginal muscles during sex. Women sometimes use the Ben Wa balls throughout the day to improve this muscle or to induce pleasure. Ben Wa balls are also used by new mothers to assist in the healing process and to tighten areas stretched during childbirth.

Cons: Subtle Pleasure and Hygiene Issue

While many women enjoy the subtle, stirring pleasure created by Ben Wa balls, some find the effect too subtle or unappealing. Some stimulation (such as movement on a rocking chair) may be required to induce pleasure using the Ben Wa balls. There is also the issue of hygiene: most Ben Wa balls are made of plastic or metal, with cleanliness in mind. If a woman does not clean the Ben Wa balls properly, the result could be a painful vaginal infection.

Ben Wa balls are not an ideal shared sex toy. Unlike vibrators, it is uncomfortable to use Ben Wa balls covered by condoms. Using a condom on a shared sex toy is a necessity for prevention of STDs. There is a high likelihood of vaginal infection if Ben Wa balls are used in the anus and then in the vagina. Each partner should have her or his own set of Ben Wa balls, one per orifice.

Conclusion

Health experts agree that exercising the PC muscle promotes better urinary control and has positive sexual benefits. However, not all women prefer the subdued type of pleasure sometimes granted by the Ben Wa balls. Experts always remind those using Ben Wa balls about the importance of cleanliness to avoid infection.
