The Pros and Cons of Working Out Inside

Break a Sweat, but in Air Conditioning

J G Hodnette
Sometimes we all want to exercise, but not outdoors. In our modern age, we can take advantage of exercise technologies that allow us to exercise indoors. There are consequences to this, as with anything. Understanding the pros and cons of indoor and outdoor exercise will help you make the best decision for you.

Comfort

Working out indoors can be extremely comfortably. You can turn your air conditioning up, lay on your favorite personal mat, and after you are done take a shower right in your own home. If you are someone who is sensitive about the way they look, it will also be a comfort for you to not be seen exercising in public. These factors can help you keep exercising, which is what everyone wants in the long run. Outdoor exercise, in contrast, can include being sweaty and uncomfortable and also possibly being annoyed by insects and the sun's heat.

The Weather

For many people, weather can be a big blocking point for exercise. Indoor exercise eliminates these issues. No matter what time of the year it is, you know that indoor exercise is always an option. On the other hand, being out in pleasant weather can be very good for the mind and body. Sunny days will allow someone exercising outside to get a tan, though this could also be considered a negative if you are a person who burns easily. Thanks to climate control, exercise can happen in either situation and so can tanning now, but the natural choice is often better for you.

Multitasking

Many people find that indoor exercise, such as on an exercise machine, is a great way to multitask. Those with busy lifestyles enjoy watching TV while they work out. A contrary view is that this multitasking is bad for you. The benefit of outdoor exercise is that you can get your mind off of the day to day troubles and relax. Many people find exercise therapeutic and multitasking could be considered a way of ruining the experience. Just by "getting out of the house," you are doing yourself some good. People can often feel cooped up if they don't get out. We are creatures who many thousands of years ago used to migrate hundreds of miles with the seasons every year.

Heart Rate/Hydration

Because it is air conditioned, working out indoors puts less stress on your body. This means that you will be less thirsty and less uncomfortable, but it also means that your overall workout will be strenuous than if you had been outdoors. Simply getting outside and walking can often be much better for getting your heart rate up because of this. Many people find this benefit of outdoor exercise enough to overcome the benefits of indoor exercise.

Working out inside can be a great blessing, but there are also things about the outside that you're missing out on. Regardless, exercise is extremely important, so the important thing is that you're staying active.
