As with most card tricks, this one starts out as a "pick a card, any card" type of trick. In these types of tricks, you will fan out the cards and ask a participant to pick a card, any card. Once they have done so, take a peek at the bottom card on the deck. You might turn your back to the participant so you can't see his card, and peek the bottom card. You might look at the bottom card while squaring up the deck after the card is chosen. You might even just take a look when cutting the deck. Whatever way you chose, all you need to know is the bottom card. Bury the card with the rest of the deck. The card you memorized is now right on top of the chosen card.
Check your magic trick.
Now, explain to the participant that you're going to show them right away that you haven't done anything fishy. Place the deck face up on the table, and fan them out, to your right, completely so that each card can be seen. Tell the participant to take a quick look at the cards, and check that their card is indeed still in the deck.
While the participant is looking at the row of cards, searching for their card, you are going to do the same as you look for the card you memorized. Now that the cards are both face up and spread out the way that they are, your card will be the card directly to the left of the participant's card. Look at your magic show participant's card. Remember it now, so that in a moment you may astonish them.
Read the minds of your magic show participants.
Inform the participant at this point that you are going to read their mind. Tell them that without touching the cards, you're going to pick out their card. Tell them you're not only going to do this, but you won't even see the cards again.
Ask the participant to gather up the entire pile, once they're certain that their card is still there, and place it back inside the card box. Place the box out of your reach. Now you can neither see the deck of cards, nor touch it.
Ask the participant to think about what their card was. Tell them they need to think of every detail of the card. You're going to discover what their card is based on the mental image they project.
You know what the magic card is. You learned what it was while looking at the fanned out pile, but you don't want to give away that you know it just yet. Play with the participant, and raise their interest and intensity.
Start by telling them what color the card is. Work from there until finally you reveal what their card.
