The Psychological Effects of Aging

Karl Withakay
Aging has normal effects on the body. Our metabolism changes. We may not get around as easy as we used to as well. Those kind of aging affects are expected. However, many of these physical effects are combined with psychological effects. Some of the psychological effects include the following.

Depression

Depression is fairly common as many people age. Perhaps you used to have a full head of thick hair. You used to be able to eat anything you want without getting gas or gaining weight. Maybe you used to be a strong as a bull and be able to run like the wind. As you got older though, you gained weight, you went bald, you can't lift things like you used to. You recall the good old days and then look at the shape you're in now. That can make nearly anyone depressed.

Dementia

Dementia is the most common psychological effect associated with aging. Dementia is defined as mental deterioration of organic or functional origin. Though dementia can be caused by injury it is most often associated with aging. People with dementia are forgetful, confused, and often have a very short memory. Many experts say that dementia is just undiagnosed Alzheimer's disease because Alzheimer's disease can only be diagnosed with 100% certainty from a brain tissue sample after the patient as died.

Depression and dementia are the most common psychological effects from aging. The best way to ward off the depression and the dementia is to keep yourself in shape mentally and physically. Stimulate your mind, eat brain healthy foods, and mentally challenge yourself by learning new things. Join a gym and work out on a regular basis and eat healthy. If you're really attached to your full head of hair, create a nest egg and keep in handy for a hair transplant in case you go bald. All these things are good for you. They may not help but they certainly won't hurt. You'll be hard pressed to find a doctor that advises against staying in shape.

Aging is a normal part of life. We can let it get us down or we can embrace it, pass our life experience on to others and make our golden years the time of our life.
