The Public Library Can Be the Best Resource for Homeschooling Families

Maggie Blake
Most people understand that homeschooling requires tons of information that comes from many different sources. Packaged curriculums and workbooks can be good sources of this kind of information, but one of the very best resources for a homeschooling family, is their local public library.

It may not be obvious to everyone that their public library could be the amazing homeschooling resource that it is. However, homeschooling families with access to a good public library may find that they don't even need packaged curriculums or too many workbooks! The public library can be a homeschooler's paradise. What makes the local public library such an amazing tool and resource for homeschooling families?

Books on homeschooling - Your local public library will likely have books that are written for parents who are homeschooling. There will be books to teach you how to homeschool cheaply, how to homeschool multiple children, how to homeschool children in specific age groups (like preschoolers and high schoolers), and much more. There are books to help homeschooling parents know what material to cover in each grade, books full of project ideas and instructions, and books on different homeschooling theories and approaches, as well.

Books on every subject you can think of - Your public library will have books that cover any subject you may want to cover in your homeschool. Not only will you be able to find books to help you teach math, science, geography, and history to your homeschooling child, but many other subjects as well. Public libraries have instructional materials for learning foreign languages, books that help you teach how to build almost anything. There's just no limit to what you can learn from the books available in your local public library.

Cassettes, Videos, and DVD's - To supplement what you are teaching your homeschooling child out of books, the public library also carries a large selection of cassettes, videos, and DVD's on tons of educational subjects. Reinforce what your child is learning in your homeschool with movies about Westward Expansion, Earth Science, or insects. The audio and video section of your public library is a goldmine for homeschooling families.

Additional programs - Your local public library will likely have additional programs that can be fantastic elements to integrate into your homeschooling curriculum. Activities like story time, arts and crafts, and puppet shows, just to name a few.

Subtle but powerful benefits - Homeschooling families who utilize their local public library a lot are teaching their children to value reading without specifically setting out to do so. After all, the entire atmosphere of a library is centered completely around reading. Having such a vast amount of books to choose from on such a variety of topics can strike an interest in reading for children that is tough to match in a public school classroom. Additionally, children who visit and use the public library often learn quickly how to look up books on their own in the card or computer catalog, and to then locate those books on the proper shelves.

The library is such a wonderful place to be, especially for homeschoolers. So be sure to utilize your local public library as much as you want!
