The Public Library: Stop in and Check it Out

Lisa Marie
Have you been to your local public library lately? In not, stop in and see what they have to offer to you and your family.

Libraries have changed a great deal over the past decade or so. Gone are the old card catalogs of decades past that housed the "cards," hence the name card catalog that told you the Dewey decimal number of the book you were looking for. The new "card catalog" is electronic and it allows you to search for your item by title, author, subject, or key words.

Libraries off far more than books for their patrons to check out. Most public libraries offer a large selection of CD's and DVD's for circulation. You stand a pretty good chance of finding recent movies and music for loan at your local library. If you don't find exactly what you are looking for don't hesitate to request that the library acquire the item you are looking for. If it is something they believe will be popular they will probably be more than happy to get it for you.

A few libraries have also begun offering video games for their patrons to check out. Besides offering the games for loan, some libraries also offer game nights for their teenage patrons to partake in.

Besides the periodicals, books, CD's, DVD's, and video games that libraries loan out to patrons for free, the library also offers free Internet access. Patrons can use the computers to search for jobs, play games, and keep connected with friends and family through email and social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace. Patrons can get help from the reference librarian as to how to correctly search for the information they need on-line.

Libraries also offer story time for young children and guest speakers on various topics for adults. As mentioned earlier some libraries conduct game nights for their teen patrons to participate in.

So, if you are in need of a book, DVD, magazine, or CD and don't want to own it, go check out your local library, you may be surprised by all of the wonderful things you will find.
