The Puli tends to be wary of strangers and are not aggressive but they will vocally warn their owners or attackers. The Puli can adapt to any living arrangements including apartment life as long as they have adequate exercise. They deal well in both high heat and excessive cold environments.
The Puli requires a different method of grooming. Their coat is unique and must be groomed thusly. The corded coat forms around 6 months of age. The woolly undercoat intermingles with rougher outercoat. The mats must be separated regularly by hand until they are about the width of a pencil. Bathing is important but trying obviously takes more time that other breeds.
Puli bitches weigh 20 to 30 lbs and vary from 14 to 16 inches tall. Puli males weigh 25 to 35 lbs and vary from 16 to 17 ½ inches. The Puli comes in solid colors of black, all shades of gray and white. The Puli has an average life span of 10 to 12 years. The Puli is a hardy breed without many major health issues but reputable breeders test their pups for hip dysplasia and eye problems. Be sure to procure a health certificate or a health guarantee with the sale of your pup.
The Puli does require exercise. If they are not able to run and play in a yard, then they should be taken on brisk walks or runs. They make great additions to a farm or stable as they were once the protectors of cattle and sheep.
The Puli is an ancient breed brought from Hungary where they were used for herding, companionship or protection of home and herd.. After World War II the breed was almost extinct but controlled breeding programs brought their numbers back for dedicated dog owners to enjoy this breed for days to come.
To obtain a Puli puppy you must find a reputable breeder. Puli puppies range in price from $900.00 to $1,500.00. A list of reputable breeders can be procured at the American Puli Club website.
