The Purpose of Having a Sponsor in Alcoholics Anonymous

Whether people realize it or not, there's a purpose of having a sponsor in alcoholics anonymous.

Deepest Darkest Secrets

One thing that you don't want to do in Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, is share your deepest, darkest secrets. It's a suggestion of Alcoholics Anonymous, that you only share these secrets with your AA sponsor.

Your AA Sponsor

The reason that you only want to share these secrets with your AA sponsor is, because your secrets might find their way out into the real world, if you do this. While, yes, it is an anonymous program, people like to talk. It's just their nature. Your deepest darkest secrets might find their way rolling off of somebody's tongue and into the real world, where there are real consequences.

Secrets

For example, if your secrets would get you in trouble with law enforcement because of a past mistake that you made, it's suggested that you only share this with your AA sponsor. The reason is because people like to talk, and sometimes; what's said in meetings, doesn't always stay in meetings.

Talk To Your Sponsor

I've heard stories about people that actually got in trouble with the police because they shared their deepest darkest secrets; during AA meetings. If you wonder if you should share something during a meeting but you aren't sure about it, I advise you to talk to your sponsor about it and they will suggest what the best course of action should be.

You And Your Sponsor

While Alcoholics Anonymous is all about sharing your experience, strength, and hope with others; some things are best left kept between you and your sponsor, and, between you and God.

That's a good point that 'secrets' should only be shared with your sponsor...people do like to talk...just as in all walks of life.
