The Quarter Note: How to Understand Its Usage in Music

dean qualls
You're sitting in class and the first thing your music teacher wants you to do is play or sing a quarter note. You know the english language, you know how to tie your shoe. You even know how to draw a quarter note. The thing is, you still do not understand what the teacher is talking about. This guide is to help explain what a quarter note is and the easiest way I know how.

This is the easiest way to explain what a quarter note is:

Basic

Take a dollar bill. Imagine that dollar being a measure of music. Let's assume there is a 4/4 at the beginning of the sheet music. How many quarters are in a dollar bill? Four, right? There are four quarters in a dollar bill. There are also four quarter notes that make a complete measure. This is called a note duration. This formula can also be used in the quarter rest, half note, half rest, whole note, and whole rest. This introduction can also be used for the smaller notes, but that's another lesson.

A Theorized Approach

There are four quarter notes that make up a completed measure, therefore, in a measure of 4/4, a quarter note gets it's time for 1/4th of the measure. 4/4 is a time measure and the formula for this is just as simple. The top 4 you see wrote down in the time signature means that the quarter note gets one beat. The bottom 4 means there are 4 beats per measure. To measure time in music is basically a need to play and read in the world of music. Music is based on time and timing. To measure time is to know not only when to play, but most importantly, when not to play.

The quarter note is simply the easiest way to comprehend music reading. For me, it is step one of learning how to read and write notes. Know the foundation of a quarter note and you can learn the foundation of the other notes.
A quarter note wrote on a staff will give you a time, but it will not tell you what key or beat to play or sing. This introduction is to merely explain how much time a quarter note actually measures out.

So, the next time you see a quarter note wrote on your sheet music, (in 4/4 time), just imaginr it as a quarter in a dollar bill. Using this meathod, you can figure out the rest of the notes in the sheet music.
