Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States . Earlier this month, Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital of Maryland and the Montgomery County Stroke Association held the first annual Stroke Symposium. In observation of May as Stroke Awareness month, the focus of the event was to educate and inform the community on the cause, treatment and prevention of Stroke.

Throughout the Stroke Symposium, a variety of workshops took place that educated healthcare providers and community members on the cause, treatment and prevention of Stroke. The highlight of the day was the keynote speech presented by Jackie Mayer, Miss America 1963 and stroke survivor.

Stroke is easily preventable. By making simple changes in your diet, exercising on a regular basis and lowering your cholesterol levels, it is possible to decrease the risk of suffering a stroke. It is important for Stroke survivors to return to living their lives as normally as possible. Tremendous advancements in the field of Stroke Rehabilitation are now placing this reality well within reach.
