The Quintessential English Major

Etienne J. Sarfelli
Lately, I have realized that I have become the quintessential English major. In the two years since my college graduation, I have held down a regular job to "support myself." I have also worked as a tutor, a substitute teacher, a substitute writing lab instructor, and a Census worker (all at the same time) and have very little money to show for it all. I write on the side as often as I can, which is not often enough. I keep trying to find a job in my field, but all I really want to do is be completely self-sufficient as a paid writer.

Unfortunately, I do not have much time to give to my art. I do not have the time to read or to seek things to write about. And when I finally decide on a topic, I realize it is probably something that no one else cares about but me. If I am lucky, I write a piece of poetry here and there and hope that one day it will be something to add to a collection.

If it were up to me, I would become a starving artist. I would quit my jobs and wander the streets penniless and hungry in order to increase my writing portfolio. I would place myself in harms way to get the story, and I would spend all my free time writing and submitting articles to every publishing company known to man. But my life is not completely my own. I have a daughter who needs to eat and have somewhere to live. With that said, I guess I will have to find another way to expand my creativity, and I will have to discover a way to build more hours into the day while I am at it.
