Quitting smoking may be the most difficult thing you ever do. Don't let anyone tell you that it's a 'piece of cake'; it isn't. Addiction to nicotine is all too real. The calm, fulfilled feeling it gives, is not easy to give up. The need to hold that cigarette between your fingers may not seem important while you have the nicotine in your system, but deprive yourself of that feeling and living without it begins to feel insurmountable.

Prepare yourself for a struggle, but know that the benefits of quitting smoking outweigh the satisfaction smoking gives you right now. Withdrawal from smoking does not last forever, and you will find that you can live without that drag of smoke into your lungs. If you find yourself unable to get through the day without smoking, don't give up hope. Try again and again, if you need to. The following tips on how to quit smoking will help you succeed.

If you have ever gone on a diet, you know that it is best to prepare yourself for the weight loss program. You think about the diet plan, stock up on healthy foods, and make a food plan to follow. The same holds true for this, How to Quit Smoking Plan.

The first thing to do is give yourself a goal to reach. Choose a specific amount of time to give yourself to quit smoking. Choose an amount of time that is reasonable for your lifestyle. Take into consideration the number of cigarettes you smoke on a daily basis and how many you are willing to give up per day. A reasonable time frame will make success more attainable.

The second thing is to let everyone you know that you are beginning your Quit Smoking Plan. The support of friends, family, and people you work with is extremely helpful with this difficult process. They may even offer advice if they have already given up smoking. Talk to your support group; ask them for help and reassurance if you are having a difficult day, craving a smoke. You will be pleased with the positive re-enforcement people close to you can give.

The third thing is to mentally prepare yourself for the battle with nicotine addiction. Research the effects of nicotine withdrawal, so you are not taken unawares by its effect on both your body and your mind. In this way, you are better able to deal with the negative effects. Many people are afraid when they have withdrawal symptoms. They don't know whether it is from not smoking, or if there is some other physical problem they are having. The better prepared you are for the symptoms you will experience, the better success you will have.

The fourth thing in the plan is to search your house, vehicle, office, handbag, and anywhere else that you might have stored a pack of cigarettes. Remember the old adage, "Out of sight, out of mind". If you are not exposed to a pack of cigarettes, then your willpower will not be put to the test. Visual stimulation is very detrimental to your progress with resisting a cigarette.

If you find that it is just too hard to go it alone, make an appointment with your doctor to discuss the options available on how to quit smoking. There are many products available both over the counter and by prescription to aid in quitting smoking.

Keep in mind that you will not only be helping yourself by not smoking. You will also be making a healthier environment for your family and friends, eliminating the second-hand smoke they inhale while you are smoking. Once you have kicked the habit, you will feel healthier, have more energy, be more alert, and breathe deeper. Also, don't forget all the money you will save as the cost of cigarettes goes higher and higher.
