The Quiverfull Movement and the Duggar Family

When Seventeen Kids Just Isn't Enough

Ben Eubanks
Quiverfull (or quiverful, as the spelling seems to vary by source) is a growing religious movement in the United States. According to the religion's Website, Quiverfull is basically about having children. A lot of them, by the looks of things. The argument for this behavior is, according to the Wikipedia page, that children are blessings from God, and humans should not attempt to limit the birth of children through birth control. Other nicknames for people in the Quiverfull movement include "quiver full," "full quiver," or "QF." The Quiverfull movement has become popular in recent years, because of the prevalence of the Duggar family.

The Duggar family is unique in that they currently have seventeen (yes, you read that correctly) children, and the eighteenth is on the way. The due date for child number eighteen is in January, and the TV show that showcases their lives is planning to televise the event.

This family follows the basic tenets of the Quiverfull movement, including God's commands in the Christian Bible. These commands include quotes like "be fruitful and multiply," and "children are a gift from the Lord." While some may think it extreme, I think it is honorable that this family strives to hold themselves to the highest standards of their chosen religion. I know that it cannot be easy to thrive when trying to take care of that many children. A book about the religion, called "A Full Quiver" by Rick and Jan Hess, makes the argument that if God was to bless a family with money or health, the people wouldn't turn it down; therefore why would someone turn down a child, which is an equally important blessing?

On the Duggar family Webpage, there are some fun facts about the family. Some of the interesting tidbits about the large family include "Michelle has been pregnant for over 135 months (and counting) of her life," and "The Duggars are debt free."

On the Discovery Channel Website, there is a game called "Name That Duggar." This will test the knowledge of veterans of the show by asking them to remember the names of the seventeen current children. It is a timed 40-second quiz, and incorrect guesses means that you "lose" a part of your life, which is measured by a tater tot casserole.

I think that I will try to check out the show in the near future, because it would be interesting to see how the Duggar family (or anyone in the Quiverfull movement) could survive with eighteen children.

Children are a wonderful blessing. My husband and I have 7 all together. (3 from my first marriage, 2 from his and a set of b/g twins between us) We made the choice to not have more children because pregnancy risks have increased each time I've been pregnant and this last time we nearly all 3 died. If I had been as blessed as Michelle to be able to have healthy pregnancies I'd still be popping them out. Each life has so much to give. WAY TO GO DUGGAR FAMILY!!!! My you be blessed with as many grandchildren per child as you've given birth to!!!! big families create communities in which children are all loved and protected!

I THINK THIS IS GREAT, I MEAN TE BIBLE DO SAY THAT CHILDRENS ARE A GIFTFROM GOD AND THAT WOMENS SHALL BE FRUITFUL AND BEAR KIDS. THAT'S WHY I HAVE GAE UP BIRTH CONTROL AND I'M LEAVING MY LIFE IN GODS HANDS. I MEAN ALL BIRTH CONTORL DID WAS MADE ME SICK, SO I TOOK THAT AS MY SIGN FROM GOD. I WAS ALWAYS TOLD GROWNING UP THAT I WOULD NEVER BE A MOTHER AND NOW I HAVE TWO WONDERFUL LITTLE GIRLS, AND YES SOMEDAY I WOULD LOVE MORE

from what I understand ob quiverful, a woman must keep her husband sexually satisfied all the time. Does this mean that she can never say no? If so, I don 't agree so I guess Ill never make it to heaven

They inspired the "octomom" to have her children. Everything seems so smooth and fun, but the cash from the reality show makes the difference, debt free or not. I feel for the Octomom because she has been living in her head, but so has Michelle Duggar. Her life span is being compromised. God gives us choices and staying pregnant most of her married life like a queen ant does not help her babies to develop to their fullest potential. God love them all.

Well, it looks like they did it again. A new baby is on the way as well as the first grand-child. Wow...this family must be on to something. A large family, love, trust, respect, giving, sharing and so much more. And they have no debt. Again, WOW. If I could just start over again with a smitten of their knowledge of how to truely live! What a blessing!

I think it is an amazing thing the Duggar family has done. having so many kids is a blessing from God. anyone who can have kids should have as many as they can.one child is a blessing but to be able to have alot of children is all the more blessing.ya'll have a blessed day.
