The lowest rank of a Jedi is a Jedi Youngling. This is a Jedi that is still learning to control the force and how to properly use a lightsaber. This title is given to a Jedi when they are beginning their training. This title is removed when they are old enough and will advance with their training. In Attack of the Clones, Yoda is seen training a group of Younglings.
The second rank that a Jedi can reach is a Padawan. This is when they are under training of a Jedi. They must build their own lightsaber in order to advance onto becoming a Jedi Knight. They usually wore a braid in their hair which was removed once they were a Knight.
Thirdly, a Jedi can become a Jedi Knight. They are a full-fledged Jedi that have finished their training. They have the proper skills, knowledge, and dedication. They must finish three tests - The Trial of Skill, The Trial of Spirit, and the Trial of Knowledge in order to become one. This is the most common ranking of a Jedi. In the event of a heroic act, a Padawan can be quickly promoted. For example, when Darth Maul was defeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi, Kenobi was brought up to the status of Jedi Knight.
The fourth ranking that a Jedi can attain is a Jedi Master. They can reach this stage when they have successfully trained a Padawan learner. A Jedi can also become a Master if the council notices that the Jedi Knight is very powerful and is disciplined in the Force.
The fifth status a Jedi can reach is a Jedi Counsel Member. They hold a seat on the Jedi Counsel. Permanent members, such as Yoda and Mace Windu, do occur. However, most are on a limited term. They must have the status of Jedi Master in order to enter the council, in which Anakin Skywalker was the only Jedi not to be.
The highest ranking a Jedi can reach is a Jedi Grand Master. This is the title given to the wisest in the council. This was given to Master Yoda. The Grand Master does not get any extra power when voting in council issues or any greater privilege. Other Grand Masters were Mace Windu and Luke Skywalker.
