The Real Deal

A Poem for TC

Etienne J. Sarfelli

He lives in his studio

Among his books

His paint brushes

His acrylics

He sleeps on an old red couch

It isn't burgundy or maroon

Or anything exotic

Just red

He is a true artist

He would starve

Were it not for his part time job at a bakery

Which keeps him afloat

When the patrons are low on cash

"This is the real deal" he says

When I ask if he really lives there

He gave up everything for his art

His car, his home, his women

His lifestyle as he knew it

And I envy him the paint under his nails

the evidence of creativity

I envy the fervor with which he

produces his masterpieces

from his self imposed freedom.
