The Real Meaning Behind Antioxidants, and If They Are Really Beneficial to Your Health!
Something to Think About
An antioxidant is a chemical compound that actually inhibits oxidation. During the winter months your body has a lot more work to do fighting off infection. Many people believe that increasing your intake of antioxidants that you will be able to fight off those cold causing infections. Something known as free radicals tend attack the healthy cells, especially during cold and flu season. It has been medically proved that antioxidant protect those healthy cells from the free radicals.
Tea happens to be a very popular drink during the winter months. Some people even choose to replace their daily cup of coffee with tea. Especially good for you because of the amount of antioxidants is green tea. There are also other vitamins such as C and E, beta carotene, and selenium that also help to fight the free radicals in your body. Tea contains an antioxidant known as phenol, which can also be found in grapes. A rule of thumb to follow if you want to increase your antioxidant intake is to eat colorful fruits and vegetable. The brighter the fruit the more antioxidants are in them, according to many scientist, and doctors. One of my favorite things to eat which is also healthy is dark chocolate. The main or primary antioxidants are known as phytochemicals, which actually work to make your immune system stronger. But if you were not aware of it there are numerous kinds of antioxidants each with a different function. For example lycopene, which is found in tomatoes, has been shown to help lower a person's risk for prostate cancer. Lutein can help to prevent cataracts, and various other eye disorders.
Obviously all types of antioxidants are beneficial to a person's health. The key of course it's to make sure that you eat healthy. If you follow a regular healthy diet plan, which includes plenty of fruits and vegetables then you will not have to worry about whether or not you have enough antioxidants in your diet. If you want to increase your intake then add a few more fruits and vegetable to your diet.
Many doctors also strongly suggest people increase their intake of antioxidants in order to help prevent cancer. Medical research has shown that antioxidants help to lower a person's chances for just about all known cancers. Of course there is no guarantee that by increasing your antioxidant intake you will never get cancer. The bottom line is changing your eating habits so that it includes more antioxidants can only be beneficial for your health in the long run.
