Spotting one tiny speck can cause us to invest minutes into snatching it out. We don't consider the effects of our potentially dirty fingers or the fact that the so-called damage from the particle is already done. We ignore these facts and refuse to take a drink until we've eliminated it. How do we as a people react when it isn't something you can see in the water that can hurt you?
I'm not talking about bacteria- they're a given. You know there are millions of tiny organisms floating in your iced tea or lemonade- you just try your hardest to knock think about that as you get a refill. No, what I'm talking about is the fluoride government initiative. Frankly there are a lot of wild stories when it comes to this the effects of fluoride. From impotence to cancer- excess fluoride has been blamed for it all. Would the government be adding it to water sources if it wasn't a safe pesticide? I'm here to tell you that while the effects are sometimes exaggerated, there's a lot more than a speck of truth to it.
Bladder Cancer.
Does fluoride cause cancer? The short answer is a disturbing... yes. Two types of cancer have been linked to exposure to fluoride. Bladder cancer has been contracted by employees in establishments with fluoride in their water supply. This phenomenon needs to be further explored, but has been determined as a definite link.
Bone Cancer.
The second type, bone cancer, has been thoroughly tested in governmental animal studies. The results detected a disturbing trend of animals exposed to fluoride-laced water developing bone cancer while their counterparts in the control group did not. While less of a serious risk to adults, child consumption is a much greater threat.
Dental Fluorosis.
Not many are comfortable with having a poison more lethal than lead in their drinking water. Despite this, many will happily use mouthwash with fluoride with it as the active ingredient. What sort of effect can fluoride have on your mouth? The least of your worries is discoloration of your gums. White and brown spots have both been the direct result of exposure to fluoride. In severe cases of fluorosis the effects on your gums and teeth cells can be much more damaging.
Allergy.
It goes without saying that an individual with a fluoride allergy is going to be subject to more damning results than others. Just what is in store if you happen to have such an allergy? Some severe migraines will be the first of your headaches- no cruel pun intended. If you're lucky, it will stop there. If not, you have gastric complications and skin irritation ahead. The higher the concentration of fluoride in your water, the worse the effect.
Bones.
The impact of fluoride-laced on bones and bone structure is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, a dose of fluoride does increase bone volume. Before you celebrate, know that there is a trend of less overall strength per unit of volume. So while it increases volume, it's weaker. For children this can lead to a greater likelihood of fracture. The same greater threat is prevalent in the elderly- most often in the hip region.
The Brain.
Of all the studies conducted, be it on the pineal or thyroid gland, those with the brain are the most unsettling. It has been determined that not only does fluoride damage brain tissue itself, but also cognitive functions and memory. This effect is of much greater risk to children and the elderly, but infants stand to lose the most. Permanent damage is an all too likely reality for an infant that ingests a dose of fluoride. If not death...
