The Real Thanksgiving

Tara M. Clapper
Ah, my warring ancestors.
On Thanksgiving we gather
To ignore what they did to each other.

This year, I'm sick.
It's just a cold
--cough cough--
But it was worse for them.
Death by smallpox, maybe by musket or sword.

It's 'nice' to think we get along.
Watch me eat the cranberries:
Chew it like mush,
The way some people seek freedom
By devouring that of others.

I don't look mixed,
Just white (or maybe just Irish)
But I am a complex variation
Of English subjugating
Everything else that makes me.
