The Real Truth About Animal Testing

Kyle
Animal Testing is often thought of as animals being mistreated and put through torturous tests, but the truth about animal testing is it is a regulated way to test the safety of products in a scientific way. Because animal testing is a safe way to improve safety of products it should remain a way to ensure product safety in the future. The improved safety of products, experiment regulations, and lack of alternatives are just some of the reasons animal testing should remain a product testing method.

Animal testing is controlled by many laws and regulations. Each animal testing lab must have its own Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee or IACUC made up of at least five members. The IACUC of each lab is to prevent the animals from being treated in an inhumane way. Each IACUC includes a doctor or veterinary medicine, a practicing scientist who is experienced in animal research, a nonscientific member, and one member who is not related to the lab except through being a member of their IACUC. Another way the labs are regulated is by laws such as the Animal Welfare Act. The CAAT website, last updated June 21, 2002 states "The Animal Welfare Act... sets standards for the [care] of laboratory animals." This law maintains that the animals are treated well.

The lack of alternatives to animal testing is another reason it is important. Many of the people who oppose animal testing believe that alternatives should be used in these tests. However most of the animal testing cannot be done on a test subject other than an animal. Many studies require studying the behavior of the animals to see how medications affect their behaviors. Wikipedia.org, last updated May 1, 2006, states there is "no substitute for behavioral studies." All testing that can be done on man-made materials instead of animals is done that way. There has been a large decrease in the use of animals for testing by cosmetics companies since the invention of a fake skin which is used to test if the product is corrosive.

Animal testing also improves our safety. New medications and other products are tested on lab animals to be sure they will not cause problems in humans. Most vaccines are developed from testing medications on animals to see if they become cured. Lab animals are also used to help train doctors and veterinarians to be able to practice doing operations before doing the operation on a person. All of these tests work because, according to the BBC website there are "No differences between lab animals and humans that can't be factored into tests."

Animal testing is a well regulated method to improve the safety of products and to help develop life saving medicines, for which there are no alternatives. This is currently the only way to test many products and must continue to be used to ensure our safety.

A life is a life no matter what. Nobody has a valid reason to why animal testing should continue, there is none. Stop being selfish about this and always think for your own benefit. Why is it wrong for a person to be used for experiments and for an animal its right? Might does not make right, stop animal testing, there are many other ways to discover things this should no longer have to be done.

Oh and those "Just for Shock" pictures you see. ARE valid. I dare anyone to go into those facilities "research" labs and take a tour and see just what is being shown. Quit being an Ostrich by sticking your head in the sand. The problem won't go away by doing that. And don't turn your back either. Because Cruelty IS happening. Daily!!!

I recently received a letter from the University of Utah. They do not deny the use of animals for research nor do they deny the cruelty of their research. They refuse to find alternatives and so Now I know that many other research facilities do the same. When and how are we going to stop the use of animals in research. I believe there are options and it IS not Justified. the animals have no voice and so I find that using mine for them is what I want to do. I see the pictures of these research animals and I literally get sick to my stomach to the point of vomiting and I can't stop the tears. I believe we should be above the use of animals for these purposes. I also believe in God and that he made us responsible for their health and happiness. He put us in charge of them because they need our care not our cruelty. I pledge to do what ever humanly possible to stop cruelty at every corner. oh and they are not PAMPERED they are used and cruely abused Painfully and inhumanely. This has gotta

What do you want us to do? Let them out into the wild? THEY WILL NOT SURVIVE! Over the years of being put into a lab and being pampered with food, water, and already known to work medicines if they fall ill, they have most likely forgotten how to find food. Also, the most extreme thing that happens to them is that they die, and that doesn't happen 100% of the time, and to continue on that, would you rather that they release the product and it gives you a serious illness? That could have been avoided via animal test. On my last note, think of it as they are taking the fall to increase the lives of thousands, think of them as taking the fall for TONS OF PEOPLE.

how would it feel if it was you

I agree with HIPPY 101. How in the world could you do that to an innocent animal? They have the same rights as us humans. If you dont agree with me I think that you have some issues. It isn't right for a person to hurt an animal like that!

yep. zactly. animal testing sucks. i used to work at BBW and everyone says they do animal testing but they dont.....MAC used to animal test but not anymore

as a animal science major potentially pursuing a career involving animal research, I have to say my main complaint with protesters of animal testing is the arguments they use. they choose not to do any outside research and sprout facts that are in fact completely untrue, but based of the shock media of animal rights groups. Also the use of profanity, does not make your argument stronger, rather it makes you seem a very uneducated and extremely annoying person. Give me a valid argument and an educated response and I will value your opinion. Until then I will continue to support animal research when done in a controlled research setting, as I, unlike other people have done the research to back my views.

animal testing is not ok at all!
if you have to use it on an animal just to find out what it does. then dnt be messing with it
animals have feelings just as we do

I agree with hippy101, i think anyone who does animal "research" like that should have to go through the same pain!
