The Reason TV Drama Lost is Losing Ratings

Cancellation is Near for This Hit Show

The TV show Lost that was a breakout hit and peaked at more than 20 million viewers has take a big fall in the ratings for its third season. The Valentines Day episode drew in only 12.8 million viewers and while some shows would kill to have those kinds of ratings, for a show like Lost it has people wondering if the end is near.

The show features a huge cast, most of who were on an airplane that crash landed on an island. Since then they have received no help from the outside and have been searching their new home to see what they can find out about the mysterious things that seem to happen. People have died and new people have been introduced as the Others. They are simply another group of people on the island, who seems to have been there for a while.

While I have said to myself that there is no way that ABC would cancel such a show, we only need to look at the graveyard that is littered with cancelled sitcoms and dramas. Even those heavily loved by fans have gotten their pink slip because they did not bring in enough viewers.

As sad as it would be to see such a great show get cancelled, they have no one to blame but themselves. They are in season three and yet there are still many questions that have gone unanswered and yet they continue to puzzle and confuse viewers. The producers and writers have killed off cast members and thrown in some intriguing storylines but at the end of the day, they are asking their viewers to wait years to get an answer, where most shows will at least give some satisfaction each season.

If a person has never watched Lost, I feel that they can simply watch the pilot episode and then watch the most recent episode and realize that much of the plot is still a mystery. It is true that revealing too much too soon can mean death for a show but so is not giving your fans anything to hold onto.

One of the castaways disappeared from view on a raft with his son at the end of season two and yet many episodes will pass before viewers get to see what happened or is going to happen to them. One of the biggest mysteries seems to be that the survivors were all lured to the island for some reason but the way that the show is going, fans might never find out why.

With mysteries unanswered and long breaks in between some episodes, some fans have turned away from the show that they used to love as they find that it no longer holds their interest. Networks need to understand that their will always be a new show to get people's attention and even some old ones as well.

  • Lost does not reveal enough, while it still asks more questions.
  • Fans have turned to other shows such as Heroes.
  • Long breaks between episodes have turned some people off.
Lost is an engaging drama but it seems to have lost its way.

i only want to say, now that there are only two or three episodes left in the final season of the show, that you were wrong. but it is important to note that the viewer amount did drop off as the series evolved. people gave up. people found other shows. people started watching it online, instead. but trust me-- it was worth the wait and worth the effort. i know i'm going to be very happy and depressed when the show is over, no matter how it ends, because it was an amazing story-telling experience to witness over the years. trust me. get all six seasons on blu-ray, take two weeks off work, and indulge in the epic story that has become Lost.
