The Reasons You May Score Better by Putting the Driver Away when You Golf

Scary Good
Many people love the feeling of absolutely getting a hold of a drive off the tee. Sometimes these people are really good golfers, while others may be average or below average golfers. These people also have the characteristic in which they believe that it is ok to spray the ball and miss the fairway. Little do these people know however that if they were to put the driver away and hit a more accurate club they would start to score better rounds. It is a proven fact that the player that consistently hits the fairway will score better then a player that misses the fairway.

Golf is a very simple game that gets extremely complicated with poor decisions. These decisions include what I was talking about earlier, missing the fairway. Playing out of the fairway is obviously a lot easier then playing out of the rough. Just ask the PGA professionals that just played in the 08 US Open. If these players hit the ball into the thick rough they would have to pull out a highly lofted club and play a shot into the fairway so they could approach the green. Now golf is a little bit different for them because the holes they play are so long, that they have to be able to hit the driver to be able to score well. That is not the case for the average golfer on the average course. Every hole is of decent length, and is reachable without using a driver.

Let's take a par four that is 340 yards long. If you were to hit a hybrid club equal to that of a 3 iron, and you hit it 200 yards you would only have 140 into the green, from the fairway. Now doesn't that sound easier then whacking the driver within about 60 yards away from the green, but behind a tree in the rough? I think I would take the 140 yards in the fairway over the other option any day. This type of thinking can be put into any hole. Let's say the hole happens to be 400 yards you could possibly hit that hybrid club twice, and make sure that you have good wedge play, or possibly hit a little longer club off the tee such as a three wood. Anything that gets you into the fairway will make your day a lot easier.

Golf is an easy game if you approach it with the right attitude. You need to understand that it is a lot easier to get from tee to green by playing the fairway in the middle, instead of playing from the rough. Even if you have to take a little of your normal drive, you will eventually learn it is well worth it as soon as you start to score better rounds.
