The Problems Under Investigation
According to the United States Government and the Surgeons Report, "The decade between 1983 and 1993 was marked by an unprecedented surge of violence, often lethal violence, among young people in the United States. For millions of youths and their families, a period of life that should have been distinguished by good health and great promise was instead marred by injuries, disability, and death (Surgeon General's Report) As we can see from 1983 to 1993 there has been a very unusual surge of violence among are young people. What caused the surge? What is the United States doing to curb the flow of violence? The United States implanted certain plans to help curb the growth of violence among our youth. According to the same report violence has dropped over the last ten years. According to research and information gleaned from reports and data organized. According to the report these methods used to curb violence was proven by the use of Statical Data Gathering.
The Surgeon General of the United States
Is who conducted the Studies
The Surgeon General and the United States of America conducted and organized the report on teenage violence in America. They also organized a plan to curb the violence created. According to the report, "In October 1985, Surgeon General C. Everett Koop convened an unprecedented Workshop on Violence and Public Health. The participants agreed strongly that it was time public health perspectives and expertises were brought to bear on questions of crime and violence. Throughout much of the last century, these questions had been dominated by the social sciences and the criminal justice system. For the most part, health care efforts were restricted to the rehabilitation of convicted offenders. Dissatisfaction with both the timing and the outcomes of the "rehabilitation ideal" spurred the search for a more effective role for health care in addressing violence"(Surgeon General's Report) According to this we can see why and how the report on teenage violence in America.
Method's Used to Gain Information
One of the methods used to gain information about the violence among young people is statistical studies and case studies. Experimental research has research was used to determine the effects of the programs that were brought into America for the deterrent of violence in America. According to the report," Experimental research is the preferred method for assessing cause and effect as well as for determining how effectively an intervention works. The data from which the surgeon general gathered has shown there has been a decline in violence among youth since 1993. The report says, Since 1993, the peak year of the epidemic, there have been some encouraging signs that youth violence is declining. Three important indicators of violent behavior-arrest records, victimization data, and hospital emergency room records-have shown significant downward trends nationally. These official records reveal only a small part of the picture, however. (Surgeon General's Report) It was said in the report some of the methods and number's used could have been skewed. Maybe these numbers are way off do to the studies only being on a very small part of America. This report is often said to be controversial even at the end of the report it list's this as a possibility.
