The first topic we will discuss is why it's harder now to get into college. People who have a GPA of 4.0, top sat scores, and overall great academic profile are being shut out of top colleges. These factors still do count to get into a good college but that's not all that matters anymore. Many colleges and universities this past spring rejected over 20,000 or more students. This is all happening because of the rise of more graduates there are about 700,000 more high school graduates than there was years ago. There are also more smarter and talented students than there was years ago, which is making it very competitive for students. It's like finding a job the employer usually chooses the smartest candidate, a good resume also helps, just like good test scores and GPA does for school. Another main reason is that more students are applying to more colleges than in the past as well. Students now may apply to more than 10 colleges than they did in the past and this causes just more stress for colleges. They have to choose now with only a small amount of slots to fill with these competitive students. Another problem is money issues, some colleges are very expensive and students who cannot get financial aid, grants, or loans are left out. Some families are just too poor, or the student's family does not meet the requirements for the loans, grants or aid, this is probably the most major problem of them all.
The next topic I will discuss is how to get into college. Having the right GPA, sat scores and good background is a must before deciding to go to college, but it's not all. To get into college you have to figure out first what your major will be. When you figure out what it is you want to study then you can choose the best college for that program which will guarantee you success in that field. Many students are just choosing 10 or more colleges because of the name and no really paying attention to if they have a program for their major. You may want to do something in a field that requires only a community college, technical school, or a university. If you choose a technical school they are very pricy, but sometimes guarantee you a job in your field prior to graduation. These kinds of schools are only 2 years, and do not require you to take a lot of math; English and science like regular colleges do only classes in your field of work are required. If you choose a community college you can take the classes for your certain field as well, but you still have to take normal classes like English, math and science. The good thing about a community college also is, after your 2 years are done you can transfer to a 4 year university or college. If you choose a 4 year college or university you are also guaranteed work when you're done, but usually the majors you choose from a university takes more than 4 years. There is a lot of work involved in a university which takes years to accomplish but is worth it in the end. The next subject is financial aid, grants or loans these should be figured out before you choose your school and enroll. Most people cannot get this kind of help but there are programs that can help you and agencies, it just sometimes is very stressful. There should not be any reason to not get into college, if you cannot figure out a major let a counselor help you with that, financial aid, and choosing the right school that best suites you.
The last topic I will discuss is why you should choose to go to college. When a student graduates they have many options go to college, get a job, stay at home, or do nothing. They may have many reasons such as, colleges rejecting them, not enough money, bad GPA, low test scores, do not think they're smart enough, family issues, etc. These reasons are understandable but should not stop you from doing something that will make your life a lot better in the future. Some people feel that 12 years of school is enough and they don't need to go on any further, which is not true. Jobs are becoming more competitive, harder to get, and the economy is changing every day. If you only have a high school diploma it can, but not always be hard to find a decent paying job. College will help you grow as a person, teach you how to live on your own for most people, give you responsibility, and make you more mature. College also gives you a degree, which in most cases do not guarantee work but is still very helpful in the job market. So I think one should choose college as a path to a great and bright future.
While there are probably other reasons why college is hard to get into these are just some of the main issues. If you use these tips I assure you it will help with your college experience and for a bright future.
