The Re-Emergence of Layaway

Rachel Soden
They say that if you wait awhile that everything will come back into fashion. This idea seems to be accurate in the case of layaway. Layaway is taking certain items and paying for them over time. Once the item is paid for then you get your item. While a few months ago creditors were pounding down your door to give you credit, you may find that they won't touch you with a ten foot pole. If you're maxed out and don't know what you will do for Christmas this year, one way to get what you need this season is to use layaway.

So how do I go about getting an item on layaway?

There are many places that still use layaway. There are actual stores such as Kmart, TJ Maxx and Burlington Coat Factory. However, there is a stigma attached to layaway that may make you embarrassed to utilize it. If you don't want to go out and do the shopping, and stand in line to do layaway, you can go to a website such as www.elayaway.com or www.lay_away.com and get some very nice purchases such as iPods, computers, GPS, etc. to put on layaway.

Another added benefit to using online layaway is for a slight fee per month elayaway will report to the credit bureaus. This will help those with bad credit back on the road to recovery. The downside to online layaway is that it is auto deducted from your bank account.

If you do decide to go through a store in your city, you will have to put a certain amount of the purchase price down and small fee for the use of layaway. You can cancel the layaway purchase and receive a refund however you will have to pay a fee to do this.

Bottom line, layaway is a good idea for Christmas this year. The fee you pay for it is less than you would pay on a credit card. While the instant gratification of receiving your item is appealing, if you don't need it right away, why not just let the store hold on to it while you save money?
