The Regret - Poetry Against Abortion - Pro Life Poem - Prose, Free Verse

I remember a childhood friend
That was dear to my heart
We went through so much together
And helped each other
Through many hard times

But as highschool came
I started to drift
To a different, older crowd
That lead me to being pregnant
And married at a young age

We still saw each other sometimes
And I thought of her often
So when the time came
For my child to be born
I was so happy to see her
When she came to visit

I joyfully told her I had a little girl
And that I had given my baby her name
That's when her head bowed
The tears began to fall
And she shared a secret she had kept from me

"I was pregnant at the same time you were"
She said with pain in her eyes
And continued on between broken sobs
"My mom told me I had to get an abortion,
or she would send me away"

I was shocked, I hadn't known
We had never kept secrets before
And now my dear friend
Held a baby in her arms
That wasn't hers but bore her name
Knowing that she had killed her own

And for the first time
There was nothing I could do to comfort her
For I could not bring her baby back
Nor take away the nightmares that haunted her
