What do you need to know in order to be a school bus driver? It is very important for a school bus driver to know the regulations and polices for the school bus company that they work for. Every school bus company has expectations that need to be met in order to become a school bus driver and to remain a school bus driver. These expectations are regulations and polices are written in a manual usually for every school bus driver to read and follow. There are many regulations and policies that a school bus driver must know.

Driver Qualifications

What a school bus driver needs to be and needs to have in order to be allowed to drive a school bus. Drivers need to be a certain age. Most states have a minimum age of 18 in order to become a school bus driver. There is usually no maximum age to be a school bus driver. They also need to have their state CDL. They need to have their certifications up to date. Plus, they need all the other things that are needed depending in which state you are working in because every state is different.

Daily School Bus Inspection

A school bus driver needs to perform inspections of their bus before their bus routes. Some of these inspections include making sure all the safety equipment is in good condition. School bus drivers need to make sure that their bus is neat and clean. They should also check their school bus again after their daily routes.

Driver Expectations

The school bus driver needs to know the rules of what times to be at a bus stop and school. It is very important they are punctual. They need to know how to deal with school employees, parents, and students in a professional manner. They have to deal with many people during the day, and it is important to be a calm and smart individual.

Bus Discipline Report

School bus drivers need to know how to deal with negative student behavior in a professional manner. That means that they have to remain calm and know how to keep peace on the bus after an incident. They also need to know how to write up a discipline report for that student. Then they have to alert the school and the parents as to what has happened.

First Aid

All school bus drivers should know first aid and CPR. They also should have first aid kits on their bus. They should know how to remain calm in a serious situation, and the knowledge of what to do in one. They should also have emergency numbers on hand.
