The Religion of Scientology: History, Beliefs and Practices of Then and Now

Scientology is a relatively new religion to the world. First founded by L. Ron Hubbard in 1954, the religion began to slowly take off. However, to this day many individuals may be confused about the religion of Scientology and exactly what it stands for. Thus, to truly understand the history and practices of Scientology, one must first understand the meaning. According to Patheos, the word itself translates to "knowing about knowing", which provides only a brief introduction into the religion of Scientology. The history and practices of this religion may vary significantly when compared to many of the mainstream religions.

Scientology Beliefs

The history and practices of Scientology indicate that individuals are considered as spiritual beings, better known as thetans. Thinking in terms of the person being anything else leads to confusion and the inability to recognize one's self. The spirit is seen as being immortal and is detached from the mind and body of man. Perhaps one of the most interesting concepts of the religion of Scientology is that of humanitarian work. The church of Scientology believes that the answer to the problems of mankind can not merely be solved by direct intervention. Instead, problems must be solved by those facing them. This is believed to be achieved by providing the knowledge and/or tools necessary to help the individual overcome the issues that may be holding them back.

Scriptures of the Religion of Scientology

The Church of Scientology does not focus the basis of their religion on a particular sacred text, such as the Bible. Rather, the foundation focuses on the many writings of L. Ron Hubbard. Instead of placing emphasis on a single book, they are all considered to be sacred texts of the religion of Scientology. Scientology history, beliefs, and practices are all influenced by these collections of works. However, writing directly related to the teaching of the religion are compiled into various volumes. Of these volumes, the Green Volumes and The Technical Bulletins of Dianetics and Scientology are considered the most significant concerning teaching the religion.

Religion of Scientology Now

The basis for the religion of Scientology practices and beliefs is the same as it was when the religion was established. However, changes include a dramatic increase in those joining this particular religion. Statistics provided by religious tolerance groups indicate that the religion of Scientology is growing at an exponential rate, in the United States and abroad. One group in particular, Ontario Consultants on Religious Tolerance estimate that approximately three new Scientology groups, organizations, and Churches are created each day.
