Recently our mechanic in Macclenny, Florida was blessed with our presence as our car needed brakes. I asked how business was during these hard financial times, and he informed me that his business was the best it had been in years. When I asked why, he stated that his customers had told him, they preferred to keep their older cars and have them repaired. This is especially true for cars that get great gas mileage. In fact, my mechanic at Gateway Repair, stated, he had a hard time keeping up with the business now, and suggested I call ahead and make an appointment.
About a week later, our heater went out. Now in Florida, you don't need heat very often, but it chose to go out on one of our coldest weekends. In addition, the weekend was a record breaker, resulting in the earliest ever freeze for North Florida. This was about the last week of October. Our air conditioner man runs his own company called Black Diamond. Luckily the repair didn't cost much. I asked him how his business was, and he stated that he had been in business about two years, and just now was starting to turn a profit, as he had been very busy. He suggested that it was due to the fact that most people are opting to repair their old air conditioner and heating units rather than having them replaced.
About a week ago, our washing machine went out. It quit draining. We called our repair man, who we actually bought our first washer from, years ago. His name is Rick Higgenbotham and he has totally changed his business to doing appliance repairs only. When I asked him why and how this change in business took place, he advised that he wasn't selling many appliances and discovered he could make more money repairing them instead of selling them. He repairs all appliances, except for televisions and computers. He stated he has even repaired appliances such as can openers. My question is, who would have a ten dollar can opener repaired?
Times may be tough, but I have learned that at least one type of business is booming. Seems anyone repairing items is making a lot of money. Seems people have suddenly became smart and are watching their money better. On the other hand, they probably can't afford a new purchase and are opting for repairs instead.
