The Republican Party: The True Winners

Maintaining Integrity in the Wake of a Major Loss

David Pearson
Could what some would argue was one of the worst days for the republican party in along time, end up looking like a win for them in the long run?

The republican party has been dealt a severe blow in the recent mid-term elections. Yet, in spite of the results that have caused them to lose control of both the house and senate, they have maintained their integrity. In a way the republican party are the true winners. Your probably are wondering how such a statement could be made, when you consider the results painting a completely different picture.

After the debacle americans had to witness in the 2000 presidential election, specifically the voting problems (so called) in Florida with the chads and so forth, and now, as if that wasn't enough, another problem pops up with the touch screen voting machines, once again in Florida. This time, it's regarding the congressional race between Christine Jennings and Vern Buchanan. What's this have to do with the republican party being the true winners? Everything! As you know their were some rather close results in some of the the mid-term elections (both for senate and congress). In the case of Vern Buchanan-R, he beat Christine Jennings-D by less than 400 votes in the Florida district 13 race for congress. That is about as close as it can get!

Another race, even more critical to the republican party was the senate race in Virginia. James Webb-D edged out incumbent George Allen by less than 1/3 percent of the vote. That 1/3 percent ended up being around 8,800 votes.

These 2 races are fine examples of the difference (one of the many) between the democrats and the republicans. Bear with me for just a minute here, and I think you will see why I can see the republican party as the true winners here. Take for instance, the congressional race in Florida district 13, where Buchanan eventually was declared the winner. By the end of the counting, with such tight results on the ballots (400 or so), it's fair to expect some sort of re-count. However, even with the re-count still declaring Buchanan the winner, Jennings armed with enough lawyers to fill the chamber of congress itself (ok, maybe not quite that many), refused to accept the facts. No matter what, she still was the winner! "No way I lost", there absolutely were thousands of instances where the machines were inncorrect according to the flabbergasted Jennings. As if we haven't heard that line from a democrat in the past! As a matter of fact, I fail to recall the last time I can remember a democrat who didn't have a load of excuses as to why he/she didn't win an election. Now take the Virginia senate race for example, a race with huge implications for the republican party. In fact, the last chance they had to hold at least a 50/50 split in the senate with Cheney-R being the tiebreak! Yes the difference in the ballots was between 8 and 9 thousand, but when you consider the percentage being only 1/3 of a percent, Allen certainly would not have been out of line in the least, asking for, even demanding a re-count. Yet he didn't! He did the right thing by accepting the results like a man and moving forward. I'm sure it wasn't easy for him, but that's the way the ball bounces sometimes! In fact , isn't that what democracy is all about.

Since 2000, there has been an ugly pattern developing with the democrats. It seems they are horrible losers! They always have a reason or excuse when the election results don't favor them. Americans have spoken, the democrats have won big this year. Yet they are still having issues with the few losses handed them. Have you noticed, the republicans on the other hand, who lost big time, are accepting their medicine, not crying and whining about it, simply put moving forward and living to fight another day. If the democrats are not careful, this victory handed to them by the great american people will be short lived!

This is why in many ways the republican party is, the true winner.

wow...I have seen and heard quite a few attempts to either marginalize or spin the Democratic victory, but to say it is because of Republican integrity probably has to take the cake!
