The Rescuers: Educational Activities and Games for 2 to 5 Year Olds

Rebecca Hayes
Let's face it, kids love movies, but it's been proven that they should watch no more than 2 hours of TV a day. So why not combine their love of a movie and activities that will help them learn and grow? Following are suggestions for the movie The Rescuers released in 1977. These activities would also work well for preschool classes and party games for this age group.

Watch the movie
Let your kids watch the show while you prepare the activities for the rest of the day or attend to other responsibilities.

Rhyme Activity
Teach your child this rhyme. They'll enjoy how silly it is and it will teach them the concept of in and out.

Crocodile
She sailed away on a bright and sunny day,
On the back of a crocodile
"You see," said she, "he's tame as he can be,
I'll ride him down the Nile."
The croc winked his eye as she bade her mom good-bye
Wearing a happy smile.
At the end of the ride the lady was inside,
And the smile was on the crocodile!

Read a Book
There are a lot of incredible books available to go along with the movie The Rescuers. Pick one you think your child would enjoy and involve them while you are reading. Ask them questions about the pictures and story. Following are a few suggestions of books to read.

  • Shiver Me Letters: A Pirate ABC by June Sobel and Henry Cole
  • Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile Book & Cassette (Read Along Book & Cassette) by Bernard Waber
  • Mouse Count by Ellen Stoll Walsh
  • My Big Rescue Book (My Big Board Books) by Roger Priddy

Find the Treasure
In the movie, Penny is required to search for a giant jewel. Your child can search for a treasure too. You will need a box, tongs and numerous objects, such as toys and unbreakable trinkets. Give your child the tongs and tell them that they need to find and retrieve a certain object in the box. Using the tongs to move and pick up objects requires a lot of coordination and is an activity your child will greatly enjoy.

Magic Swamp Sand
In the movie, Penny is taken to a swamp to look for the Devil's Eye. Your child will enjoy playing with magic swamp sand. Mix cornstarch with water until it is like bread dough. When you play with the mixture it molds like dough, if you leave it alone it looks like it is melting. Put the mixture on a cookie sheet and let your child play with it.
