Researching your family history can be beneficial for many reasons. It can be for purposes of finding heritage information for college scholarships, medical information, or simply to curb a persons curiosity. Starting the process is fairly easy; the first thing that needs to be done is to sit down and list all relevant information available such as the persons full name, date of birth, place of birth, baptismal information, and death and funeral information if applicable.

Start with yourself and build the tree up through the generations. You, your spouse, and children, then your parents, spouses parents and on up until you have no more information available. Depending upon your particular heritage and how your family came to the United States is vital to finding information about your families history.

If your family came to the United States by way of Ellis Island, you can visit and enter the family surname. This information is very important as it details where the person is from, birth date, marks, where they are going, who their nearest relative to hometown is, who the person is going to see, and possibly an occupation.

There are several other sites that offer loads of information on family history one is called Ancestry. You can search for free but, if you want to access certain vital records you have to pay for them. In addition to this web site, other sites such asRootsweb, also provides links that are available for county specific items.

In genealogy it is important to understand that it can be lengthy and expensive. However, if you are patient and willing to pay the price of time, one may consider enlisting the help of volunteers who will offer their time to look for specific items per county. A list of volunteers can be located through a web site called RAOGK- Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness. Make sure to read all of the requirements of making the request and you can gain some very valuable information this way.

If you think that you may have come to a brickwall, try posting messages on boards that are set up for genealogy. Yahoo groups has several different threads designed by last name, county, or state.

If you are trying to find burial information on a certain person, try searching at a website by the name of Find A Grave, to see if a site contributor has added the information into this database. This web site is mainly a contributor based sight where people (including myself) volunteer to "stomp" cemetery grounds in efforts of collecting documentation to post online for the world to see. The neat thing is in addition to looking for a relatives burial spot, if you find one or post a submission yourself, you will be able to leave virtual flowers and/or virtual cards. There is a wealth of information available at a genealogists disposal. Finding the information may prove difficult but trust me, where there is a will, there is a way. You do not need to hire a professional genealogist nor do you need to spend a massive amount of money to locate this information. You just need a little patience, and a lot of resources
