The Responsibilities of a Business

Evan Ego
Another college essay assignment for my English 101 class way back in the late 90's. I actually got a C+ for this one! Argh!!!!

What are the responsibilities of a business? The most important responsibility of any business is its customers (Ya think college boy?). Its employees come second (I hope I never have you as a boss!) and the environmental area in which it is based comes third.

So what is so important about a businesses customers? (Let me guess...alcohol? No, wait...) The customers are the people that buy that businesses product of course (Man! I was so close). If the customer isn't fully satisfied with the quality of that businesses product or with the service that business provide, the chances of them coming back for more is slim to none. Every business should have trained staff on hand to answer any questions that the customer may have, listen to and apply customer ideas and handle complaints accordingly (Ok then....).

But what about the employees? (What? Are we talking about the ones that hold the counter up all day or the ones that actually get something done?) The employees are the people who make the actual product that the business offers to its customers (What, no alcohol?). These people are looking for job security to protect themselves, their families and their futures from poverty. If a businesses employees are happy with their employers, then they will be more apt to produce a better quality product for that businesses customers (Employee, employers and apt are three words that should never be used in the same sentence!). So, happy employee's equal happy customers and happy customers equal a successful business.

Finally, what is so important about the environmental area in which the business is based? Every business should operate within the environmental guidelines of the community in which it is based. It must respect the people of that community and take measures to preserve the environment around them. Toxic chemical containment and recycling are two of the most important of those measures. (Jesus! No wonder I got a C!!! I never even answered the question that I started out asking!!!)

In conclusion (Oh God that's lame!) a business has many more responsibilities aside from just these three (Like?), but unless a business can please its customers, its employees and preserve the environment of the surrounding community, then it will never be a successful business.

I'm actually sorry that you had to sit through that, but thanks for viewing!

I could actually picture this as part of a stand-up comedy routine or a video done with a voiceover bit.

I love the way you've revisited your college paper and added the comments that come with time, perspective and a finely honed sense of humor :) This one made me smile and had me hooked from the first sentence to the last. Your critiquing of yourself is super!
