South America is the only place where squirrel monkeys have been found in the wild. They have been spread throughout the world today by animal experts and collectors alike. Despite their cute appearance and seemingly playful lifestyle, these monkeys are still creatures of the wild. Though it may not be common, squirrel monkeys do attack people occasionally and should be kept away from children and the elderly especially. Even though outbreaks are rare, you can never be too careful. Their teeth are sharp and biting is something they will do if they feel threatened or possibly for no apparent reason.
The squirrel monkey is a very active monkey, and requires much more attention or invigorating activity that most dogs and cats. They also have non-domestic eating habits, meaning that they don't eat what you eat, or what your other pets do. They're used to the food that is found in their natural habitat. This can be expensive and time consuming to collect the necessary diet for your squirrel monkey. However, many pet stores that specialize in exotic animals carry squirrel monkey food. This is far from the healthiest route, but provides them with the vitamins essential to their lives. From birth, you can feed the monkey milk and slowly move on to fruits and vegetables. As they develop and no longer need milk, it is recommended to feed them solely fruits and vegetables of a wide variety. This will keep them happy, healthy, and make sure their immune system is strong.
One of the biggest surprises to unseasoned squirrel monkey owners is the fact that their sexual activity is so behavior changing. With their reproductive organs still in tact, these monkeys can be much more aggressive. This is why it is best to spay or neuter your squirrel monkey before they reach sexual maturity. If you don't your monkey is more prone to bite during a special time of the month. Keep you and your loved ones safe by not letting this happen.
If you read this and still want a squirrel monkey for a pet then that's great. Providing it with lots of fresh air and space to roam will help ensure that it is healthy, as you cannot walk them around your neighborhood. Remember that they are wild and you should always be on guard when handling it.

A squirrel monkey is an insecto-frugivore. 85% of its diet must be from insects. Also, they are widely distributed in Central America, not just S.A.
