There are many, many ways you can market your car for sale - these 12 steps should be on the top of your list if you need to sell and are unsure of how to start your marketing campaign. Below is a detailed list of the 12 steps.
Visit Ebay Motors. The website URL is: http://www.motors.ebay.com/.
Ebay motors will also allow you to post for a similar price that the current market (competition) is offering. Ebay Motors allows you to sell your car across the entire United States.
Visit Auto Traders. The website URL is: http://www.autotrader.com/
Auto Trader has an ad price range of around $26 to $70 for a standard ad. The website offers a trade-in offer option that allows car dealers to come to you - generally, the best offers come from the car dealers with the best chances of reselling your car. For example, if you want to buy a Ford, then you will most likely buy from a Ford dealer, not a Saturn dealer. So, the Ford dealer will give you the best trade-in offer. So with Auto Trader, you now have both the option of selling on their website and selling to dealers scouting for trade-ins to buy.
Visit The Thrifty Nickel. The website URL is: http://thenickel.com/
The Thrifty Nickel offers ad rates starting at $3.50 for 10 words. The Thrifty Nickel offers nationwide web ads and regional printed ads. It is by far one of the cheapest options for pay-for advertsising.
Post a sign on the vehicle with a LARGE phone number! Thousands of potential buyers are traveling on the roads along with your vehicle. If your car is parked in a lot, the sign will easily catch passersby and may result in a quick sale. Posting large signs all over the car will increase teh chances of a sale.
*BONUS TIP* If you want to be especially clever, park your car where the most people travel by your work. This might be right near a very busy road or this might be on the closest parking spot(s) near the exit or entrance. If you are shopping at a center, park the car right on the dead last parking spot where all passing customers can clearly see your for-sale car or van.
Post signs near your residence and at/near local bus stops. People walking sometimes don't own a car (yet.) So you may want to attract the attention of pedestrians. The best spots are main streets or at large intersections.
Ask everyone you know for leads to potential buyers and get the word out. Marketers often say that the best advertising is word-of-mouth referrals from people you know. Co-workers may want the car. A friend may have just gotten into a major wreck and may be buying soon. A local mechanic may need a loaner car for premier repair clients. You never know where your sale may come from. Conversations can develop into a whole chain of talks that may get your car or van sold in no time at all.
Scout out the local DMVS offices for teenagers with parents. Some parents want a "crasher car" to break their new teenage driver into, and your car might be the next "first car" for that new driver to wreck.
Post signs at local colleges and high schools. Colleges and high schools are full of workers who cannot afford to pay $500 a month for a new car, and students are often seen shopping on shoestring budgets. Colleges have public notice boards, and some colleges allow ads in the restrooms. This is usually a free way to post ads. Check any ads twice a month.
Advertise in local high school or college newspapers. These newsletters or papers reach the parents, too. This should only be considered if you have extra money to burn, and the cost should be around $10.
Your local grocers might have interested employees. Most employees working the local grocery stores make less than $11 per hour and many cannot afford a new car from a dealer. Employees view a car sale as a per-paycheck amount due, so be prepared for a weekly or monthly pqyment request. This option should only be considered if you know the person well and/or verify the person's identity with at least two official IDs. Most of the time, the bank should be able to issue a note on the vehicle and pay you directly while they handle the financing. It is almost never a good idea to accept a payment plan unless you are well-off financially and can handle a violation in contract agreement.
Believe it or not, scrap metal places might pay up to $1500. If you have a completely wrecked-out car or van and you want a quick sale, then check out the scrap metal dealers, who pay buy the pound. Weigh out the car and calculate between ten and thirty cents on the dollar, and you have figured out the potential price for your car. Don't sell to those people who haul away your car and credit you $100 for a donation or $100 cash - they will turn around and collect five times that value. It's almost better that you shop around the scrap metal dealers for a quote and then pay a tow truck $100 to deliver the vehicle there after you get a solid promise to pay for the car.
Develop a website and hand out the address. This is a tactic that can land you hits on a Google search and can allow you to post incredibly short ads while allowing buyers to link out to a fully-stocked website complete with pictures, movies, descriptions, a history, etc. And your website can contain an online contact form to accept leads to potential buyers while screening out people scouting for addresses to steal from.
*BONUS TIP* Never hand out your address to just anyone - always meet in a public place and write out a formal sale agreement called a Bill of Sale. This will be required for your buyer to go register the car in his/her own name. Safety should always be of concern - never offer the car for a "test drive" unless you yourself will be in the vehicle. Also make sure that your buyer has a driver's license before you sell or offer to "test drive" the car. One traffic court case revolved around a parent trying to explain how her unlicensed thirteen year-old daughter managed to buy, and keep, a car for nearly a year without the parent knowing about the car. The astonished judge listened on as the mother pleaded that, because she worked two full-time jobs, she had never really seen her daughter and could not have known about the car.
