The Retro Feel: Five Ways You Can Still Experience the 60's

Rebecca Green
The 60's were a very popular time. It was a time of war, peace and fashion. Nowadays it seems to be making a comeback in certain areas. While not everything from the 60's was glamorous, there are ways to give a sense of the 60's to your own life.

Lava Lamps

Lava Lamps are more popular now than ever before. Perhaps it's the zen-like state you fall into if you watch the lava rise up and down in these lamps. Or perhaps it was the novel 'state of the art' design they have, almost conal like space shuttles are. These lamps are useful and suiting to any room. Add one to a kitchen and it adds a sense of whim to the kitchen, the living room gets a sense of relaxation and the bedroom is given this individual feel. These lamps aren't just 'lava' anymore, though. They have lava lamps that are called a Wizard Lava Lamp. These are extremely conal in shape and instead of lava the lamp heats up and glitter flickers throughout it. It creates a very mystical and relaxing feel just like regular Lava Lamps. Remember though that if you wish to purchase these lamps they do get hot so be sure that they don't get placed anywhere an animal or small child may accidentally touch it. As with all things, safety first.

Peasant Shirts

A few years ago, the only place you could find a real bohemian-like peasant shirt were new age shops. You know the ones, where they sell incense, occult books among other "oddities" like tarot cards and one of a kind gifts. These shirts were rather inexpensive, but often times difficult to find. Now, you can go into any department store and find these in the popular clothing section, only at a higher cost and less quality. But it's the fact these shirts are now so readily available that has the 60's feel swirling about. These shirts were often very feminine with beautiful colors and often the most incredible flowing sleeves you could find. It had a renaissance feel to them and has carried over into the modern peasant shirts that are available everywhere.

Skirts and Hip Huggers

Hip Huggers have been popular pretty much straight through the years since they were introduced. But mix these with the right shirt, the perfect amount of flare at the legs and you have the feel of the 60's. These jeans can run pretty high in cost - as always with fashion the more popular the style the higher the price.
Skirts, however, in the last few years have taken a turn back onto the long, flowing skirts that were quite popular among girls in the 60's. These have been fashioned nowadays with little bells for that extra touch of femininity. The skirts are often layered and bell out almost like the old style hoop skirts. Some of these come with sewn in crenaline to give it a hint of extra puff. These are often lightweight and good for both casual and formal wear.

Door Beads

When I was younger, I was fascinated with door beads replacing regular doors. I thought they gave a sense of individuality and they were something that weren't normally seen. However, in the last year, some of the more popular stores have begun selling these little box sets that include a runner for the doorway and beads to hang down in the doorway. These come in an array of different kinds of beads, like butterflies, stars and even crowns. These can vary in price, but give the surefire essence of the 60's only with a twist of modern day appeal. Generally these appeal to girls moreso than boys, but nonetheless they carry the whole feel of the 60's with them, no matter where they end up hanging.

Mood Rings

Probably one of the big ones that has carried through since they were created too, the mood ring is ever popular and available practically anywhere. You can find these in novelty stores and even in dollar stores, if you know which ones to look in and where. Almost all of these are adjustable but you should be careful with these as they still tend to bend and break easily. These rings base their color change on body heat and blood pressure. Often they are accompanied at purchase with a chart to tell what color means what. For the most part, Deep blue means extremely happy or in love. However, online sites do help with those 'inbetween' colors if you know how to search for them properly. These are perfect for people of any age.

The 60's are around us in more ways, however, these are the five most noticable around that I've witnessed first hand. While the real 60's may have ended long ago, the stories, memories and sounds of the 60's will remain with us for all times.

I was born in Southern Cal in 61 and remember my family crying in front of the TV in 63 when Kennedy was assasinated. My first mood ring came in the 70's as a teen. Funny I don't ever remember lava lamps, mini skirts and peasant shirts ever going away totally. But then again I spent 20 years in the Pac NW where everything is behind the times a little. Now in 06 living in one of the fastest cities on earth I still burn my incense or oil while I sit in front of a computer! Kind of ironic how things change but sort of stay the same no matter where you are.
