The Retro Series Pop-Up Hot Dog Toaster by Nostalgia Electrics - a Review

Tracie Walker
The Retro Series Pop-Up Hot Dog Toaster by Nostalgia Electrics is a unique little toaster unit especially for hot dogs and buns. At around $20.00, the price is right, but how does it work? Is it easy to use? And just how do the hot dogs and buns taste?

The idea of the hot dog toaster is simple. There is a little, removable basket in the middle to put two normal sized hot dogs in. Slots on each side hold hot dog buns, opened up butterfly-style. There are settings from 1 to 5 on the side, accessed by a dial, so the hot dogs and buns can be toasted to taste. Once the setting is chosen, the lever on the side is pushed down, just like a regular toaster, and the hot dogs and buns cook for the set time, then the lever controlling the baskets pops up, allowing access to the cooked food. A tiny pair of tongs can be used to remove the food.

The Hot Dog Toaster doesn't work perfectly, however. The buns are a little difficult to fit in to the slots, and must be pushed down after you lower the lever. After the lever pops up, it will have to be manually raised a bit further. The tongs work rather well, but it might be a good idea to unplug the toaster before using them, since they are metal. Sometimes the unit smokes and hisses as juices from the hot dogs drip down on the heated base. The buns brown a little unevenly so the tips might be a bit burnt.

But overall the toaster works as promised. The buns do get toasted, which gives a nice, crisp taste. The hot dogs have a much better flavor than boiled ones ever do, since most of the juices remain inside. The three of us available when I tried it thought the overall taste of the toasted buns and juicy dogs was quite improved from our usual way of cooking by boiling in water.

The Hot Dog Toaster was also very easy to use, even with the slight adjustments that were necessary. Children could use this unit, especially if they were told to unplug the unit before using the tongs to remove the food. This is a great idea for college students, or bachelors, as well. It might be a problem if there was a large family or group of friends to prepare food for, though, if everyone wanted to eat hot food together.

The toaster looks very retro cool, with red sides, cream ends and silver striping. The inside looks similar to regular bread toaster, but sitting on a counter, there is a definite "cool" factor to this unit.

The Retro Series Pop-Up Hot Dog Toaster by Nostalgia Electrics works well, with minor glitches. The food definitely tastes good and is quick and easy to fix. The price is reasonable, and the coolness factor can't be ignored. For small families, bachelors or students, the Retro Series Pop-Up Hot Dog Toaster by Nostalgia Electrics could definitely come in handy.
