The Richard Allen Cultural Center and Museum

The Richard Allen Cultural Center and Museum opened on July 19, 1992. It is situated across the street from the Bethel A.M.E. Church in Leavenworth, Kansas. This is of great significance as the church was also part of the Underground Railroad.

According to their website, "Our mission and purpose is to educate the public about the rich history of African-Americans and their contributions to every phase of American life. We promote greater awareness of African-American heritage through research and cultural activities that enhance interracial understanding".

They work with academic institutions by conducting workshops and seminars. Additionally, they have a partnership with the public library and other Kansas museums.

One interesting thing they do is offer free year-round tutoring programs for students needing additional help with their academics. That, I find to be rather refreshing.

For those interested in tours, they have several options available. These tours range between 1-2 hours in duration and cost between $5.00 to $8.00 per person. Price is dependent on which one you choose.

The hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 1-6 pm; Saturday from 1-4 pm.

Appointments for special tours can be arranged for your convenience.

The address of the museum is 412 Kiowa Street, Leavenworth, KS 66048.

Their phone number is 913-682-8772.

Check out their website http://richardallenculturalcenter.info/1.html for more helpful information.

This would be a wonderful place to visit if you're ever in the area.

  • This museum is located in Leavenworth, KS
  • They promote the awareness of African-American contributions.
  • They conduct several different tours.
Visitors will see freedom papers dating back to 1863 on one of the tours.
Buffalo Soldier artifacts are also on display here.
Artifacts of General Colin Powell are also on the premises which should be quite interesting.

Anyone else having this problem? I attempted to send one message and a note came up that I have sent too many messages during this time period. Try back later. What is up with that.
