"The Riches" is the latest Fox TV network show that is garnering some good reviews. Fox TV is now going after the Monday night viewing audience with this interesting look into living the good life. There is some great writing here with some really interesting, offbeat characters to lure us away from network television. You could call "The Riches" "Beverly hillbillies 2007". You can compare it to an old movie called "The Great Imposter". You might even call it "fake it until you make it". Whatever you want to call it, it is a fun show to watch.

The first episode of "The Riches" showed a family in an old beat up RV coming to pick up Mom. This Mom had just spent two years in prison for theft. Turns out that this family is a Gypsy family that lives by it's wits. This is not your average TV sitcom family. From the youngest child of eight years old, to the teenagers and mom and dad they are charming rogues. They are likable, and even lovable, crooks and con men trying to survive by their wits.

The father wants a change in their lives and fate has quite a change in store for them. The Main character Wayne steals the gypsy encampment's money and hits the road. They are traveling in their RV and are part of a deadly accident. A Lawyer named Doug Rich and his wife are traveling to a new home in a gated community in Louisiana. The Gypsy family tried to resuscitate them to no avail. The couple dies shortly after the accident. A search of the victim's car produces house keys and identification. The devilish head of the family decides to impersonate the well-off couple. This is where the fun starts.

Right away, they see this beautiful semi-mansion in a gated community and decide to see if they can pull it off. By chance, the next-door neighbor couple comes over. They too are new to the neighborhood and are not suspicious of these newcomers. Doug Rich gets invited to a swanky golf club where he manages to beat a wealthy business owner out of 3000 bucks. Turns out that Doug is quite adept at a lot of things.

With the help of their son, who is a computer genius, they manage to get all the information necessary to impersonate the deceased lawyer and his wife. The mother and son want to go back to the Gypsy camp. The father is convinced that they can pull off impersonating this wealthy couple and assume their lives. He insists that they can live a better life, and sets off to prove it to his family.

Through his cunning, charm, and a bit of flimflam, Doug Rich winds up as a lawyer working for the wealthy businessman that he beat at golf. Doug Rich goes to the businessman's house at midnight, points a gun at his head, and pulls the trigger. The businessman is awed by this. Then Doug Rich points the gun at the businessman and pulls the trigger. The businessman almost faints. With a bit of trickery Rich has hidden the bullet and simply created the illusion of a loaded pistol. The businessman is impressed by Doug and offers Rich a job as head of his Corporation's legal department.

For the viewer the only question is will they pull it off ? After seeing the first two episodes, it looks very likely that "The Riches" will manage. Looks like Fox TV has a winner for the 10 p.m., Monday night timeslot. If you are tired of CSI Miami you might want to give "The Riches" a chance. The first two episodes have been fun and the writing is excellent. Tune in Monday night to see if this Gypsy family can pull this great impersonation off.
