The Rick Roll Halloween Costume: An Homage to Rick Astley's Infamous Video

Halloween is always a rough time of year for people like me. I'm normally a pretty creative guy, but Halloween just seems to want to toy with me. This year, however, the hours and hours I've logged on the Internet has finally served a useful purpose.

One day, the idea hit me like... well, like a Rick Roll, out-of-nowhere, kind of creepy, but at least it wasn't a scary face screaming at you from your computer screen.

Well, anyway, I had my best idea for a Halloween costume in years. The Rick Roll. I'm sure we've all been hit while looking at videos on the Internet, hoping for something great, then we are sadly let down by Rick Astley's famous, now infamous, "Never Gonna Give You Up" music video.

So, how do you pull off this original, and funny costume? Well, this is a rough one. It's not necessarily expensive, but it might be difficult to find all the necessary components to this costume.

First of all, with a Rick Roll costume, the basic rule of thumb is "The bigger, the better!" While, you could go dressed normally, and when people ask why you couldn't find a costume, you flip on a radio switch and do the "Back and Forth" dance that Astley does in the video. Sure, that would still be funny, but it's also just lacking some essential elements.

Obviously, at the top of your list should be, a boom box, an MP3 Player with portable speakers, or something that you can carry around and blare the song to people, along with an MP3 or CD of said song. You could play the song at random points or you could wait for people to come up to you. All of that's up to you.

Along with that, you're going to want some '80s clothes. If you can't find anything from the actual video (trench coat, acid-washed jeans, etc.) Basically, any clothes that are 20 years out-of-style will serve your purpose. Here's an important tip though, always tuck in your shirt, no matter what. It may seem like a minute detail, but it just may be the difference between people saying, "I still don't get his costume." and "Man, did we get Rick-Rolled!" Tuck in your shirt!

Another essential, you're going to want to do something with your hair. Unless, you already have red hair that's always combed into a pompadour, you'll have to do something. The good news is you can find temporary hair dye that washes out, red is a difficult color to manage however, especially if you have darker hair, so you may want to go straight to a wig of some kind, unless, you're interested in making a long change, and it's not something you'll be happy with very long, believe me.

Now, some not-so-essential, but fun optional accessories. Do you want to add an extra visual pun to the costume? Well, a good choice to go with is roller-skates, or shoes with wheels, like Heely's. Everytime, you move to a new room, you'll be rick rolling into a new room. Another, optional accessory, big black sunglasses, the kind that are just too big for your face, the kind that they stopped making after 1987.

So, after that, you'll have everything you need, and more, to Rick Roll everyone at your Halloween party. You can almost guarantee that you'll be the only one with this costume at your party. Your only problem, now? How do you top this costume next year?
